Re: 11 years ago...
And now, please, show me such an old game which is still as much popular as DN3d with so many mods WIP (yeah, doom, but it doesn't matter).
DN3d was always a MAGIC. |

11 years and Duke still beats lots of newer games.
Happy birthday, Duke3D!

Very sorry, or very belated? I think you're just supposed to say "dude... it was your birthday?" after a couple of days have passed.

Re: 11 years ago...
I didn't see this one before I made one in the Duke Nukem forum.
Oh well, Happy Birthday Duke 3d. Still the best FPS in my eyes.

Happy birthday old guy.
That's because we would happen to have an excellent port of it thanks to three people around here.

Re: 11 years ago...
I remember that time. I remember that the shareware was supposed to be released in December, but got delayed, and a guy in this very forum (or the forerunner to it, at least--I sure don't still have my old registration) said something like, "Well, I was on holiday and could have enjoyed it, but now I will be going back to University and simply won't have time to play. *Golf clap* for your lost sale!" Those University students . . . simply no time for games! I also remember that a copy of the shareware somehow leaked a few hours early, and a guy was posting about how awful the game was on various message boards. Had a few people worried. I admit that I was a little disappointed when I first fired the game up, but it's not unusual for me to have to warm up to a game. I didn't like the forced damage from the initial drop, even if a health bottle was right there, and I didn't like the difficult-to-see-and-avoid lizcat (and, I'm not actually sure why I've always called them that--a search on lizcat duke came up with exactly one hit, so I guess I'm about the only one) projectiles. Still, by the time I was in the movie theater, my opinion had changed. I didn't end up sleeping at all that night. It quickly became a favorite and, of course, it remains so to this day.

Re: 11 years ago...
I remember going round to a friends house and we used to play a lot of Warcraft II (remember THAT?). I asked if he fancied playing some Doom "Oh, no, I've got something much better than that!" he told me.
We fired up the demo and pretty much spent the entire week playing the first few eps through in Co-op mode. I still remember playing 'The Abyss' - it was like magic compared to playing Doom, you had earthquakes, things could be broken, there were 'real' locations there was almost no end to see and do - in comparison, it was as close to virtual reality that you could get at the time! I don't think there has ever been since such a complete "Oh My God Look at THAT!" experience with a piece of software (yes, even photoshop :-D ). It was like exploring a brand new world, and it was pretty wonderful. There have been other games, and there have been better graphics, but there has never been since that complete sense of immersed in something completely different and new. Strangely enough, I just this weekend I got to play 'The Abyss' in Co-op again, this time with my 16 year old son!

Re: 11 years ago...
Yes, I used to play a lot of that just before I got DN3D. I still played a lot of it afterward, too...and I made maps for both which I played in the then new windows Kali (for those who don't know, it's an internet gaming service) for one Andrew Jackson, years of playing off of that bill.Oh the fun of playing my little map and blowing up an opponent's first defenseless townhall (and his only one) with 4 slow-moving controlable sapper sheep. Yes, he also had four of them--but of course he didn't know what the hell to do with them, or why he could see with them. Danbert, and his little program, WarDraft.
