Play Duke Nukem. Don't be depressed
Thanks to the many people who emailed us to say that there's an article out at the "New Scientist Tech" website which says that if play a game such as Duke Nukem, then it makes it easier for them to diagnose depression. It's an interesting theory, you should check out the full article to read it.

While the article doesn't specifically mention which Duke Nukem game, we assume it's Duke Nukem 3D. But since they didn't specify, we suggest you buy and play all 18 or so Duke Nukem games, and then you'll be the happiest person on the planet!

A personal remark from your news reporter: This is the kind of positive article that the general press needs to focus on, not how many kids get shot at a McDonald's. It's unfortunate that these kinds of "good video game articles" get ignored by the mass press.

Hm, looks like DN is used often for this kind of stuff I remember it being used to see how memory records differ if you get a good sleep or not or something like that. There was also a city they had to navigate through, the participants had a map shown first I think.

Also sorry to ruin it for you but the article doesn't really say playing duke makes you undepressed, just that they've found out how much the people were depressed. I can guess tho there might be people that don't know how to control the game and get depressed by it being too hard for them

Yes, I know, but people seem to take it like duke's a proven antidepressant drug.

so would George and Scott. but since 3DR is privately owned, there are no share holders to be happy too.

Duke3D keeps making science headlines, shows the popularity of the game even today. It also shows that the people doing the experiments are old enough to have played DN3D when it came out and are now out of college/high school and in the real world.
Geez, release another game already

It is relatively easy to make maps with BUILD, and in this case the test was to see how well the subjects did at finding certain locations in a map (depressed people didn't do as well), so Duke Nukem, being the most popular BUILD game, was a natural choice. There was no suggestion in the article that the subjects were actually playing the game (except to wander around in a map devoid of enemies to find certain locations).

It is quite possible that all the science articles you have read are due to the same researcher. Some subfields are dominated by very small numbers of scientists -- all it would take is for a single researcher to use Duke Nukem in his experiments over a period of years, and it could give the mistaken impression that use of the game is widespread.

before playing duke 3D I was a boring shy nerdy virgin who was scared of girls.

after playing Duke 3D I am full of confidence, have a wife, have two other chicks on the side, own my own business and my level of charisma is extremely high.

Thanks Duke Nukem for making me cool!

Further studies are underway, but the results probably won't be released for at least 10 years.
