Duke Nukum: Three-D!
I have a complicated technical question: Is it possible, or even probable, that a 3D point of view can be created in Duke Nukem I's blocky graphics engine?

I was thinking, since the actual Duke 3D is so different from what the original Duke Nukem was like, it would be an interesting conception to do a classic FPS with the graphics, original story, and enemies of Duke Nukem I. This is all hypothetical, so I'm only discussing the idea of it.

The 3D point of view doesn't have to be fancy. It can be limited in its blocky pixels, and create some sort of convincing retro illusion of being in a 3D environment (like the Mondo Medicals or Agency games of Cactus Squid).

Although the game would be technically limited, I envision the ability to look around or mouselook, the ability to jump, flip, and grapple hook, and the inclusion of enemies that could jump, levitate, or crawl up walls as well.

I suppose sultry vixens could be included, if you want small references of latter games in it.

Could something like this be accomplished within the confines of the Duke 1 engine, or could at least the illusion of 3D be accomplished within the game?

No.

The game engine wasn't designed for that purpose, plus its a sidescroller. The source code itself never existed.

Why would you try to make a sidescroller into a FPS? They're two completely different playstyles. Might as well make a new game.

IIRC the DN1 and DN2 source code has been lost.

No one knows where the source code is actually.

Thus why it's lost.

Re: Duke Nukum: Three-D!
I know the game is a sidescroller, and I know the playing styles are different between sidescroller and FPS. The reason why I was thinking of turning Duke 1 into an FPS styled game within the original engine was because I thought it was a creative idea. I do admit that it is a technically flawed idea.

I would have thought that the pixels could be modified to render the illusion of 3D, and the keys tweaked to accomodate the changes in the gameplay, but since the source code is lost, and the game editor was not designed for such complex tasks, I guess it would be difficult.

I only suggested that it would be done in the original Duke 1 engine to give a retro feel to the game, and also because any other simpler method to create an EGA retro Duke FPS, such as using Game Maker, would be taboo against
3D Realms' rules about fan games.

Anyway, this is just a hypothetical game idea, so I have no absolute hope about it being ever successfully made.

It would probably be more realistic to suggest a Duke Nukem 1 styled TC for Duke 3D than to tamper with an older classic.
