Where in the registry is the CD-Key ?

Wife threw away the manual with the key. Now I need to root around the registry to find the key. If anyone can help me I would greatly appreciate it.

It's not in the registry, it's in the file "preykey" in the "base" directory under your Prey installation directory. However, this file only contains the first 16 characters of your key, meaning that the information in this file cannot be used to reinstall the game.

No. They won't have anything to do with CD keys (as far as I know anyway)... Then again the only info I have on the subject is the message that pops up when you type in your CD key for instalation... It says some thing to the effect of "2K will never ask for your CD key. don't give it to any one" . But I don't know maybe they would give you a new one... Just not directly, maybe through an e-mail some how? I still don't see how that would work though. You may be able to return it though... Do you still have the receipt?

I just found something that might be usefull to you, but only if you have already installed the game and you want to uninstall it and reinstall it on another computer or something (you didn't really give us that many details).

If you start the game, open the command console ( "ALT+CTL+~" without the quotes ) and type in "promptkey" ( also without the quotes) it should display your CD key. I haven't actualy tried this yet, I just read it. I'll try it right now and come back and edit my post with the results.

I've tried this and it works.

promptKey - Opens a dialog box which shows your current Prey CD Key and allows you to edit it or enter a new key.

I'm sorry to bring back such an old thread, but I'm having the same problem, and I need to find those last two digits of the cd key.

It's only two characters... you could probably brute force that by hand.

hm... i hate to sound like a whimp but ive been trying for the past 20 minutes.... are you sure there isnt a way to get those last two digits?

Well, if you already have Prey installed and you have a network and want to install it on another comp in that network, just copy the files over , or conversely burn your Prey files to a cd and copy on your computer of choice ..make your Prey key file read only so ,It can't be erased by the keypolice
