Disk cache question
Latly I have been examining differnet settings and such to get the best perfomance I can. I stumbled acrossed the disk cache/memory thing.
the 1.3d manual indicates to disable disk cache"smartdrive" due to the fact that duke does its own internal cacheing, and smartdrv would get in the way. then the memory leak was detected by 3drealms the 1.5 manual indicates to ENABLE cache"smartdrive" if you have more than 8MB an no mention of smartdrv causeing any conflicts. Now the question is, Does the manual comments(1.5) in this case also pertain to 1.3d aswell(becuase of the memory leak) or was it changes made in 1.5 that allows the use of smartdrv properly to either boost performance or aid in the memory link? The downside is that it takes up memory. So, if you don't have much memory (<=8mb), then you're probably better off letting Duke have the memory instead of taking it for storing files... With a memory leak in 1.3, that would make it even more important to give Duke all the memory it can get (before it blows up...) So, with 1.5 (memory leak fixed) and enough memory (>8MB), there's no reason not to use Smartdrv. Note that you shouldn't use smartdrv under Windows; just under straight DOS. Windows has its own drive caching built in. ------------------ Matt Saettler -The Last Person on Earth who can compile Duke(TM) |
