This is what I don't get.
I can't find any information (Or im looking in the wrong places) on how far the DNF team got on the game before getting released. What did they have left to do? I've searched the internet for anything and the last shred of new updates on DNF or 3DR was from June, the Valve/E3 thing and DNMP for Xbox live. Which brings me to another question. Its what? 800ms points. Who gets the money from that? Maybe, my opinion. Take Two should probably throw a few more bucks at 3DR. I can imagine that if they do, and 3DR gets the game freakin finished before December of this year. I think DNF would go fast like MW2 Then again thats just my theory.

Re: This is what I don't get.
We seen a bug list from George that he seemed to think was a good indicator of near completion at the time, there was the Jace Hall video, George talked about working on the Console Controls, and he said "cuttting is shipping" - then there was stuff that Steve said
not necessarily in that order. There is other stuff too, but we definitely thought it was very close a year ago- those of us who believed anyway. |

Re: This is what I don't get.
According to their Producer at 2K Games at the time(now at ZeniMax) they were supposed to go gold April 1st, 2010. The same guy said that he believes they would have made it. In between the Duke Begins amended DNF publishing contract and sending the team home, 3DR and Take Two were negotiating funding for a console version of DNF along with a milestone schedule. Even though those negotiations where never completed 3DR was not only following that schedule during the negotiations, they were ahead.
Edit: "We seen a bug list from George that he seemed to think was a good indicator of near completion at the time" That was actually a list of resolved issues from their bug tracking software. Edit2: "Who gets the money from that?" 3D Realms get the money from that(After MS has taken their cut).

Maybe the game is with some console developers who are having trouble trying to make the XBox version not suck

Re: This is what I don't get.
The DNMP xbox live version had some modifications, new logo, even the copyright was 2010. So that has to say something right? It happened to be placed in the market place after the Lawsuit was dropped. From 2007 to the DNF team they had to of got somewhere into finishing it. I'm saying boldly that its not over yet. Think about it, if it was over. What would be the outcome of this Site?

Serious question. Look at the content of these forums. It's talk about what people would like in the box/on the box/in the release and speculation about the game being released, speculation without actual information. Neither of those things need be affected by a statement that it's all over. After all, it could be resurrected. I'm sure people would find scraps that could be interpreted into something that might indicate that DNF was being resurrected. |

There are some things man are not meant to know. One of them being DNF's release date.

Re: This is what I don't get.
Dont forget they layed off the workers before they were slapped with the lawsuit, if it was only a few days off from completion then the workers would have stuck it out and we would have played DNF by now, my guessing from just my judgement of the situation that they were about between 6 - 12 months from completion when the shit hit the fan.

Re: This is what I don't get.
I beleive this as well, a company like T2 would never in the history of the world put a lawsuit on a highly demanded and profitable game like DNF if it was so close to completion. DNF is very infamous and you could release it today and millions will buy it even if there was no promotions.
It makes no business sense at all.

Re: This is what I don't get.
LOL prophecy holder...
TAKE 2 saw the potential of DNF in early 2010. Then in May they sued 3DR! The ONLY REAL reason for this was that they wanted the whole DUKE IP for themselves! This was also stated by Scott via the press release!

Re: This is what I don't get.
I don't think we will ever know what happened really... it has been speculated so much the gray areas are not even gray anymore.
I have said it many times since the release of the internal development team, I want to know what happened about as much as wanting the game. Tornados happen, floods happen, crap happens... but running out of money one day without warning, doesn't happen. MrBlackCat

Re: This is what I don't get.
This game will eventually come out... why do I know this... well c'mon people money talks, and no matter how pissed T2 could be at 3DR, when there is money to be made they settled their differences.
T2 probably had a sit down with 3DR (realizing that there would be no IP grab) and was like "hey so even though this lawsuit doesn't hold much water, we can keep you guys in court long enough to destroy you. Now you can either work with us... swallow your pride and have Gearbox help;make some money and reclaim some respect in the industry. Or we can string this lawsuit out for years and ruin you. Basic war of attrition where T2 would win would get their way and this is relevant because GB did say a while back in form spring that George Broussard - "It's bittersweet. We went though a lot that we didn't have to because of a publisher that was all too willing to use their legal team as a weapon. Had we not crafted a creative solution to the suit, it could have drug on and on and things could have stayed in limbo much longer than they were and it could have been a lose-lose-lose situation for us, Take 2 and the fans." this is how I know |

I don't have time to find the quote right now, but it was something about due to funding issues... that sounds pretty much "ran out of money" to me.

Re: This is what I don't get.
A video of George playing other people's games, yelling "I LOVE THIS FEATURE, WE NEED THAT IN DUKE. GET A NEW ENGINE THAT CAN DO THIS" would not last long enough for a film.

Re: This is what I don't get.
Lol, well obviously the feature would go back to the history of the company, touch on the history of gaming in general. Now I know that "all your history are belong to us" series already touches on this, but I think a feature would go a lot more in depth

Re: This is what I don't get.
Well, don't forget the struggles of trying to keep up with Valve, iD, Epic, and Monolith, Crytek, and everyone else that has reinvented the wheel over the past decade on FPS technology. George and Scott thought they could keep ahead of the curve from these guys. Either A) They gave up thinking that the "upgrade game" was going to bring Duke into a new light, or B) Since most of the games that 3DR may have made went to third-party, they may not have gotten the funding cuts from them that they thought they would through those developers and/or Take Two. So, there's a lot of floating around in terms of the best theory at this point. Time'll tell who got what out of these deals.
