Have you thought about making them "ignore" certain sprites/items if they can't get to them after a certain amount of time, like a few seconds? And then of course just have this ignore list emptied out once a minute or so, so they don't keep trying to not find stuff they should.

If the item is put on an ignore list, then they will continue to ignore it until the list is cleared, even if they get into a position where they can reach the item (e.g. they make it to the other side of the force field, but then they walk right past the item). Plus, the item won't get put on the list until they have already wasted time trying to get it.
I do have a system where items can be tagged to give bots information about how tagged items should be approached (i.e. approach only when you are on a certain botpath, or approach only if you are to the west of it, etc.) It could just be that I forgot to tag some items, or I gave them the wrong tags, or the respawned item is failing to inherit the tags.
