Linux: Setting up Eduke32 and Wine
I was just PM'ed this morning about how to set this up, and it hit me that there is not much for running eduke32 using wine under linux. Now while there are linux snapshots, the window's binaries get updated much more often and in my case they all seem to run flawlessly under wine. So here is how to setup wine and eduke32.

First make sure you have the latest version of wine: http://www.winehq.org

You cannot always rely on a distro's package manager for example Mepis6.5 used the Ubuntu Feisty Fawn Repositories. Unfortunately it was stuck at an older version and wine gets updated frequently.

Second make sure you have the latest Eduke32 Snapshot:
http://wiki.eduke32.com/stuff

This should be a duh for most people here, but I figured I'd include it just to cover my rear.

Now install everything. Note that you will need root access to install wine.
Install Eduke32 and the duke3d.grp file to a nice folder in your home directory eg: duke3d

now open a terminal:
if you are using KDE you can hit Alt-F2 and type in 'konsole' into the box (without the quotation marks)

now in your brand new terminal type this command:
Code:
wine
this will open up a wine configuration tool. the defaults should be good for most people so hit the ok button and be done with it

now you should be back at your terminal
enter this
Code:
cd ~/duke3d
wine eduke32
and eduke32 should startup
if you are looking at playing using the HRP or with polymost you need to make sure of another thing

Make sure you have the latest drivers for you video card:
NVIDIA
ATI

I hope this helps people post any other suggestions or problems and i'll see if i can help. I'm no expert, but I can try

Cool. Just one question... Why use Wine? you can run eduke32 natively in Linux.

Also while eduke for linux didnt have sound for the longest time the win port did and wine emulated that too.

Unfortunately no. Wine only (in it's current state) runs on X86 processor, while the PS3 uses a Cell processor which is sort of like the PPC architecture.

Now if wine DID have a PPC port then yes this would work high-res and all.

EDIT:
More google searching found this link:
DarWine
It's goal is to port wine to a ppc architecture.

You can try it out if you like but mileage will vary.

It sure runs on PS3 linux. But due to the (artificial) limitations of the system you won't have much fun with high resolutions and textures.

It works nice in software mode, though. :-)
