Hmmm...something interesting from the May PC Gamer
In their usual coming next month paragraph for the June issue, they state that they will have a "world exclusive" on the return of one of the "biggest" gaming franchies.

Now, I know the return of Prey is big but does it qualify as one of the "biggest" gaming franchises - I don't think so. So I think that rules out Prey as being the "big story" for June.

Could this mean that some other 3dRealms project will be featured in PC Gamer?!?

It is prey, thats what the clue on the prey website says. I guess you were not around back in 97-98 if you say prey is not BIG.

Re: Hmmm...something interesting from the May PC G
Yes I know Prey will be in the June issue - I posted the translated binary code here first after all But that does not mean that it will be this "huge exclusive" to which PC Gamer referred.

I'm just stating that I don't think a game that was never released quite qualifies as being the "return of one of gaming's biggest franchises."

Heck, you need more than one game to be franchise!

Yeah, it says "franchise", and Prey is not a franchise, yet. Maybe they're talking about Quake IV? There was some new news on the game a couple days ago.

Nope, not Quake IV - they had their exclusive for that back in November 2004.

Quake IV has already been a front page feature in PC Gamer.

And franchise doesn't necessarily mean it has to have more than one.

Even still, it would be a stretch to call Prey a franchise don't you think?

What I'm getting at is - maybe there's a very remote possibility that we'll have a 3DR double shot of Prey and DNF?

Yeah, I guess it wouldn't be much of a world exclussive if it was just a new preview of Quake IV.

Absolutely. Prey never got released so it doesn't qualify as a franchise at all really. It was bound to happen though. People were sure to ask about DNF when they heard about this so maybe they're getting it all out of the way in the article to save constant nagging questions for weeks after. If it's anything I doubt it will be screenshots or anything major though as the games would overshadow each other. Maybe just a brief update. But man.. anything is better than nothing.

Honestly, if I was flipping through the pages of PC Gamer, and saw a Prey/DNF article staring me back in the face, it would be an instantaneous ass-kicking. It would be a slap to the face that would be exponentially harder than if DNF was to appear alone, or Prey. It would have this effect on anyone who has any interest in PC games whatsoever.

That's a good point. Both of them together revealed like that. And what if it was to be that they were going to be released within a short time of each other, say 6 months. Now maybe that's going a bit far but here's hoping. Hehe that really would be awesome. Good way of sticking it to all the doubters.

That's what I said initially but there is a real impact to be made from having both at the same time but it's unlikely as this will be overload. I still doubt we will get anything more than a titbit if anything about DNF but it's fun to speculate.

"In 28 days, it's ANOTHER WORLD-EXCLUSIVE announcement that will be found only on our pages. One of the biggest franchises in PC gaming makes its triumphant return, and we'll have all the details."

Prey can't really make a triumphant return, it never actualy had a stable start.

Those of you who are getting your hopes up for DNF will be severely dissapointed. 3D Realms is not going to have two of their games going head to head against eachother.

This just proves that it is Prey and not DNF. Prey has been as far as we knew dead for several years. It was a huge thing when it was first started so now it is back and so it is a big franchise. Though I could be wrong.

I don't believe it's DNF either, but the choice of wording that they used does make it sound like some other game (that's not a 3DR game) is going to be making it's debut in the same issue as Prey. But as Evil Angel said in the other thread, it's probably all just hyper bole.

PC Gamer is well known for over-hyping their upcoming issue. I'm a subscriber, and in the back of nearly every other issue they boast about another "WORLD EXCLUSIVE".

Take anything they say with a grain of salt and a whole lot of tequila.

gaming's greatest franchise? Prey?...

Com'on! Most gamers have never heard of Prey. Seriously, if I asked a hundred gamers what is the Greatest Franchise, 90% will probably answer GTA, maybe some will say Doom, perhaps Quake and Duke Nukem... Mario would probably be in there with Sonic... but Prey? Huahuahuaua... There haven't been one single game released, no matter how high the buzz was about this game 8 years ago, it doesn't qualify as gaming's greatest franchise at all.

i'm not surprised if it turns out to be something not that special, like a new Tomb Raider or something.

Now this doesn't add up if they're full of shit (naturally) but in my opinion, Prey was just re-announced. It seems to me like a little unlikely that it'll be done in 3 months or so.

Maybe enough for a "look it's still there" article, but hardly sufficient for a World-Wide Debut, don't you think?

DNF On the other hand...

pc gamer are a bunch of nimtards. i realize they have to sell magazines but i'm sick and tired of them using duke fans for hype.

they've done this one too many times in the past strongly hinting their "exclusive" was duke nukem forever when it's something else.

there is no way in hell "prey" fits what pc gamer writes here: "One of the biggest franchises in PC gaming makes its triumphant return, and we'll have all the details."

i'm sorry but "prey" is not an established "franchise", let alone "one of the biggest" in pc gaming. the freaking game has never been out!

now i'm not down on "prey" at all, i'm pumped as hell for the game.

my issue is with pc gamer magazine and their continued double talk and flat out misleading news previews.

this is why fans here are debating whether it's prey or dnf. don't get pissed off at fans who think it may be dnf. the only triumphant pc game making it's return would be a duke game imho.

pc gamer could have easily worded that blurb to give a hint about prey without invoking dnf.

"in our next issue, we have the world exclusive news on a pc game that has risen from the dead and is ready
to finally make it's debut. have your "prayers" been answered?"

"prayers" is an obvious wink at "prey".
"risen from the dead" is another clue as everyone basically thought "prey" was indeed dead.

bah whatever.

i'm gonna go to pc gamer headquarters and straighten shit out overthere.

Cmon guys. of course its Prey. Yeah i agree that it dont quite qualify as a franchise yet, but that doesnt mean PCGamer couldnt name it that way anyway...

After all, Prey was BIG back then. Allthoug i have completly forgot about Prey until that Aprils fool thread...

Anyway, i'm quite sure that PCGamer is referring to Prey.. and i dont find it strange that they name it like they did. They wanna catch the attention afterall, you know. And i think that when we see Prey we will be impressed and wount blame PCGamer for referring to it that way

If I saw the "biggest Gaming franchise's" I would think GTA or Warcraft. The only FPS that would come to mind is Quake 4 or DNF. I would not think Prey.

PC Gamer has lost a lot of credibility with me. But they do previews very well. So the Prey preview is something to look forward to.
