Prey losing keyboard in Linux
Hi
I have been trying for a few weeks now to run Prey under PCLinuxOS. I had
many problems with this, most of which screwed my system.
I have now had to change my graphics card to an Nvidia 7600 GS and at long last
Prey started to run. Ran ok until I saved and quit the game. The next time I tried to
run Prey it didnt seem to recognise any keyboard commands. No matter what keyboard
button I pressed nothing happened.
If I pressed ctrl+alt+f1, however, the screen cleared and I was at a command prompt,
which is what I would expect. This means that the keyboard is ok, it is just that Prey was
not recognising any key presses.
Has anyone else come across this behaviour ? Does anyone have any idea what may
be causing it ?
TIA

Try using WINE 0.60.+ or WINE 1.0

A lot of bugs like this have been fixed, I am running WINE 1.0 and I have no keyboard problems. If WINE 1.0 doesn't fix the problem post the message output of WINE (Run WINE in a terminal and dump the information WINE feeds to the terminal to a file) Like this:
Code:
wine appname 2> $HOME/winedebug.log
Also you might try restoring the default key button, on older version of WINE, WINE sometimes forgets keybindings, this has also been fixed.

Re: Prey losing keyboard in Linux
Thanks for the reply.
I have investigated a bit more and found that the problem was with Wine. If I set the Wine Configurator to 'Allow the window manager to control the windows' then that seemed to do the trick. I have been playing Prey for an hour or two now, with a few saves and restarts and pc shutdown and reboots and so far I have had no problems at all. In fact it plays as well as if not better that on XP Pro. I will wait for another day though before I say that the problem is solved.

Re: Prey losing keyboard in Linux
It seems a lot smoother and there are much fewer 'sticky' graphics. I will admit that this is probably
due to the new graphics card as well, though. I think that I read on some forum that some people think OpenGL games run better on Linux using Wine because there are less 'layers' of software to go through. I am, of course, willing to be corrected.
It is difficult to quantify or explain but the 'feel' of the game seems better.

They do run better, Quake 3 was the first game to show a huge boost in preformence back when I had a Voodoo 3 3000 16MB card, I could run that game on high settings with 60+ FPS!!!

iD Tech 4 seems more "virtual" it feels like the FPS counter is broken and the fps is way above what it is reporting it as. You know that smooth as a baby's ass type feeling, that!
