General Prey Questions
I'm a bit surprised there hasn't already been a thread like this. Since there hasn't, I'll start the first one. This is a thread for asking questions about the game, not just a thread about questions on one aspect.

I'm sure you guys get it. Hopefully this doesn't fly into Area 51 territory.

Some questions I have:

-What is the atmosphere of the game?
-Is the main character going to talk smack like another certain ass-kicking hero?
-Other than obviously showing off portal technology and known Doom 3 engine capabilities, what's in store for us that you're willing to tell?
-Minimum running requirements?

that's because game-related questions won't probably be answered until its unveiling in pc gamer. in ~2 weeks you will have you answers.

I'm not used to being in this kind of position of time. Normally when I hear about/become interested in a game, it's after the beans have already been spilled or it's because all possible questions have already been asked. Also, I tend not to read magazines.

I am pretty sure the PC Gamer preview will revela some of those things. Its 3D Realms's policy to release games WID not game info/screenshot that is about 6 months before WID.

Having read Prey-related information on a Shadow Warrior CD, I wonder:

Will the hero still be a Native American?

Is this freakin' awesome?

Or what?

2.4 What is Portal Technology?
--------------------------------

A new technology, Portal Technology is the key to Prey's engine.
This technology allows environments and events to take place that would be
impossible in real life, or by Geometry Laws as we know it.

Other 3D Engines like Quake use BSP (Binary Space Partitioning)
trees. Portal Technology is differs from BSP in a few ways.

* What Paul Schuytema says about Portal Technology:

"What the portal technology gives us, is the ability to break free from
static environment geometry-our environments can change geometry dynamically,
during game play, in a far more interesting manner than simply opening doors
and moving platforms that are found in most BSP-based engines."

* An article in Boot Magazine interviewing Joe Gilby about Portal Technology:

In portal games, the world is made of connected convex polyhedrons with
polygons allowing visibility between the polyhedron cells. "The idea is that
these cells are stored in a graph structure such that, when traversed, they
will sort correctly," explains Joe Gilby. "If you're in a room with an open
door into another room (all different portals), the far rooms are drawn first
but just the pieces that are visible through the door and window are actually
rendered. The cells subdivide the world into pieces that quickly identify
areas that are of interest, and the objects which exist in those cells. Portal
supports arbitrary sloping surfaces, and six-degrees-of-freedom viewing"

One advantage of this approach is the flexibility of defining the portal cells.
Current BSP implementations require splitting polygons that straddle the
extended plane of other polygons, so the more complicated the scene, the
more polygons you have to deal with. Portals require splitting in order to
maintain polyhedron convexity, but it's local to the immediate neighborhood
and can be avoided by level designers, given a little training. This allows for
more complicated settings. Also, the portal cell based approach can avoid
screwing affects such as characters and explosions piercing through walls,
due to the portal cell drawing order. In a BSP renderer, the physics have to
prevent objects in one leaf penetrating into another or clipping, because the
renderer will dutifully draw them in both.

"In portal, objects are confined to their containing cell, unless you explicitly
say otherwise," says Gilby. "This makes the superpostitioning come out right.
We can also use portal cells to define open spaces containing an atmosphere
medium, such as flowering water, billowing smoke, and murky water."

Yes… I clearly state in my post that it’s about the old prey but you have to agree that the old and new game will share some similarities. We won’t know for sure until the May PC Gamer comes out.

-What is the atmosphere of the game?
Futuristic first person shooter with some other stuff mixed in.

-Is the main character going to talk smack like another certain ass-kicking hero?
From what I have heard he is a Native American trying to save the world. I don’t think he/she will share any character traits with duke. They probably want to make a totally original personality.

-Other than obviously showing off portal technology and known Doom 3 engine capabilities, what's in store for us that you're willing to tell?
Portal tech with higher resolution and better graphics. I am sure it will be visually stunning but we will all have to wait and see how it is implemented in relation to game play to see how revolutionary this idea really is.

-Minimum running requirements?
This game is probably going to take a long time so just look at how fast video cards evolve and make a guess. This Portal tech stuff sounds intense so I would not be surprised if you need a physics card (PPU) to run this game.

Is that better, Kristian Joensen?

I agree. Legends, myths, stories, language and culture will make the game deeper and more interesting. 7 years ago I saw a special on TLC about extra terrestrial connections between ancient Egyptians and also Native Americans witch somehow related to the apocalypse. If done correctly we might see a sci-fi movie about the game one day. Uh Oh. I am sure Hollywood will mess it up.

Well, there's links between the mayans, Inuits and "elhuits".......... so we should have all the indigenous tribes of north america and canada included in this game.

Scott and George won't let that happen. The Duke movie has been in "development" for so long for that very reason.

Not even the guys a ID were able to get what they wanted? I dont think we will ever see Duke (the way we know him) on the big screen.

I am sure they will come up with something creative that will include everyone but still respect the individual cultures.

Did they even try getting the Doom movie to be better than it is ? If so then they haven't got the rigths to do that. IF so, they signed away the rigths to do that. 3DR haven't. They have a veto over script, cast and director.

Isn’t it 3DR policy not to hype a game to early? Didn’t they say they will only do that if its 6 months away from release? Anyway, I hope they show a new demonstration of portal tech at the next E3.

Here is the old one if you’re interested.
