No Errors running on Vista Beta2
I'm running Windows Vista Beta2 and was able to install Prey with no problem but when I go to run the game I get an error message. I'm just hoping someone else out there has encountered this and has a work around.

My systems config is:

CPU - 3.0 P4
RAM - 3GB
Video Card - ATI Radeon X800
Video driver - ATI 7.7.9.0
O/S - Vista Beta2

Here is the error message:

ERROR: The current video card / driver combination does not support the necessary features.

Yeah, I realize that. I've tried downloading the ISO for RC1 but after three tries it keeps ending up corrupted by the time I burn the ISO to DVD. Microsoft was supposed to send me RC1 on disk when it first came out and many weeks later I'm still waiting.

Unfortunately the latest ATI driver for Vista requires RC1 so I'm in a bit of a catch22 until I can get RC1 installed.

I just was surprised that Prey wouldn't run when All the other games I've loaded have had no problems. (Half Life 2, HL2 Episode 1, Far Cry, Oblivion, Quake 4, all with no issues.)

Oh well, worst case scenario I'll revert back to XP until I can get a good copy of RC1. (I've heard there are some issues with RC2, but I can't remember what I read)

Dude, you're not running beta software as your main OS are you? Huge mistake. I'm hoping you have a dual boot setup.

Re: Errors running on Vista Beta2
I've been running RC2 with out a problem I havent tried prey(lazy), truthfully the worst build of Vista was beta 2, like after a couple weeks I took it off till the interm build was released on MSDN.

You can run Vista RC2 as your main OS(Sence its a release canidate not beta), but dont run Beta 2.

You should definatly upgrade to RC1, bare minimum.

Not on a system that matters for work, no. But, yes on my toy, which also happens to have the most power of any of my machines for gaming, I am. It's a toy, if it breaks nothing lost but a reformat/reinstall while I get things done on my other systems.

I appreciate that feedback. I had read some negative things that made it sound like there were some serious issues with RC2. I'll take another look at downloading the ISO.

Would love to if either Microsoft would ever send me the long promissed disk or I could get the ISO downloaded and burned without it ending up corrupted.

This isn't the forum for vista problems: www.pro-networks.org or www.aeroxp.org. pro-networks is your best best.

Re: Errors running on Vista Beta2
OK,

So I just upgraded to RC1 and updated the ATI driver to the latest Vista version and I'm still getting the same error message.

As every other game runs fine in Vista it will be a very sad day for 2K if Prey doesn't run well at all in Vista.

Its not humanheads or 2ks fault for NVIDIA and ATI making shitty Vista drivers.

They can't be THAT shitty if they run everything else though. Just a minor issue, I'm sure it will be ironed out.

Are you sure you installed the forceware drivers for RC1? The WDDM drivers don't have OpenGL Support(WDDM means its Microsoft's driver thats sole purpose is getting the deskptop to show....not EXACTLLY true but you get the point).

Yeah, that was my feeling. I've run HL2, HL2 Episode 1, Quake 4, Far Cry, Oblivion, FEAR, Call of Duty 2, and a few others and they all ran flawlessly under Beta2 with the older drivers.

I would hope not, I'm running an ATI Radeon X800 card and Forceware is an NVidia driver. Unless somehow NVidia has become magnanimous enough to support ATI cards now and I missed it.

Re: Errors running on Vista Beta2
I somehow do not think this is a video card driver error, more likely a audio driver or mainboard driver issue. You did enough to the video driver to remove that from the list of probable causes. What kind of sound card do you use?

It could just be that the O/S isn't finished

Seriously though, i've read in magazines some people have had to actually hack their video drivers just to run the damn thing.

Its not the O/S, is diffentlly the Vista drivers sense it has minimal OpenGL Support.

Re: Errors running on Vista Beta2
It has to do with the fact that ati has poor support for any opengl games. If you look at the top of the error message you will see that it is only seeing your card as only having 9MB of video memory. It is a driver issue. I have the same problem on my x1900xt but only on opengl games. It doesn't matter if you have the Microsoft Driver or the ati driver. By the way ati says to use Microsoft driver for RC2 and not the RC1 driver.
