I am never knowingly going to buy anything from Take 2 EVER again

hi. ive been a reader here for as long as ive had the internet. i may have even had a name a posted at a few times but didnt see much point in posting. just seeing what was going on with duke nukem forever. 3d was one of the most amazing games ive ever played regardless of its age. and its not nostalgia either. but now things have changed...

it pains me that 3d has done literally nothing with duke nukem for over a decade. part of me hopes that they are really visionaries and will revolutionize the production of games (fewer quick buck titles and more long dev time, quality titles). its a nice dream. but its a dream. i dont think with all the restarts theyve had the time to put together a game that can revolutionize the industry. but thats not what keeps me coming back here. if they can even get half the fun that duke 3d had the 12+ years was well worth it. id rather have THE duke game than just A duke game. (though part of me misses dr proton and they 90s build with the trailer)

it also pains me to see what take 2 has done. stealing max payne earnings. trying to steal the duke ip. and as much as i want a duke game i dont know if i want it at that cost. i think of it like this: if a man builds a house everyone loves. and the man never uses the house but everyone wants to use it since its a really nice house and its going to waste. that doesnt give them the right to take it away even if the house could be improved (though i doubt take 2 could improve duke). even if it meant the house would go to better use. i think id rather duke die (or be sold) than see duke stolen.

but im sure things might be more complicated than that. thats why ill wait till after the hearings to make any real decisions. but if it looks like take 2 is in the wrong i will never buy any of their products again regardless of if it makes a difference. im a big enough gamer that itll at least hurt in the long run. though that doesnt mean i wont play their games.

but people are forgetting. its a nice dream. game devs taking time. its not like there arent games to play. and games could certainly be better. but like everyone here i do miss duke. and i have my doubts about the trilogy.

honestly take 2 was never worth the money anyway... all of their games have been crap... this was going to be the only game i buy with their logo on it.

Wasn't there an interview with Scott Miller posted saying if Take 2 had offered $30 million for the Duke IP then they would've taken the deal on the spot and used that money to create a new IP? Or was that not a real interview? I just saw it posted on the forums a lil' while back.

Another factor here, accoridng to 3DR at least is that the Take 2 offer for DNF had very little in the way of guarantees of minimum payment and whatnot. Sounds like a very shitty deal.


Regardless the way I see it 3DR was paid $400k originally for publishing rights, those rights were eventually bought out for about $12 million, but 3DR never got any $$$ for that transaction (BTW, was that entire $12 million JUST for DNFs publishing rights, or for other things as well?)

3DR owns Duke and were apparently nearing the end of the development cycle but required additional funding to get it out the door. They made some sort of arrangement with Take 2 on goals that needed to be reached while still in negotiations then Take 2 decided to change the paremeters of that arrangement to the point where 3DR couldn't comply then Take 2 made a last ditch effort to buy the Duke IP for dirt cheap with little to no real guarantees to 3DR.

If the Scott Miller interview I mentioned earlier was true then 3DR would definately be willing to sell the Duke IP for a reasonable price (hell, 30 million is far less than what Max Payne sold for and IMO Duke is the bigger of the 2 names). Take 2 tried to dick around and be a bunch of jackasses, 3DR didn't comply, so now everything's gone to court and the fans are left wondering wtf happened.


... or am I missing something? Those are the facts and stories we have thus far. Until additional info comes out to further clarify this whole situation it looks like Take 2 were the greedy morons in this situation. While it's of course true that they can choose whether to invest their own money into completing DNF or not, it looks like they misled 3DR during the negotiations. Of course this all comes form the 3DR side of things but until Take 2 decides to say something on the matter we don't have much else to go by.

It was the comment by Scott that you mentioned above that convinced me 100% that the reason for this was financial, since they previously turned down an offer of $80 Million. Now they would take a $30 Million deal in a heartbeat.
