Its a driver problem not a problem with the Doom 3/Prey engine, sense there focusing on DX10 with the new shader model I dunno how concerned they are with backwards compadibility with OpenGL atleast for now, it might be after RTM before proper OpenGL support will be in Vista.

While there are partnerships between ATI and MS. The fact still remains that Nvidia is much more on top of things as far as driver support. Just another reason why I'll never buy an ATI card.

Re: Will Prey be supported in Windows Vista ?
Just saw this @ the ATI website. I was checking if any updates were posted or even a new beta driver was available from ATI for Windows Vista, when this KB article was given at the side of entering the driver download.

Haven't given it a try myself yet, but should be worth a try at least. It concerns ATI and openGL under Vista.

Re: Will Prey be supported in Windows Vista ?
Seems like the link that I was talking about in the post above is not there anymore. It's just pointing to the driver download link @ the ATI website.

No worries, as the link proved to have nothing to do with our little problem. It was referring to other openGL related problems on non-Windows platforms.

Guess we just all have to wait till ATI get ther s*** together and update their drivers. I'm kinda regretting buying an ATI card, since I had nVidia cards before this one. This openGL and ATI driver "problem" has been haunting me ever since I bought the card almost 2 years ago. Looks like I'm going back to nVidia next time if things don't change.

Cheers

I've got a legal gold copy of Vista with the lastest Nvid drivers (for a 7600 GS 512 MB) and it doesn't work. BF2 on the other hand works very nicely- Vista seems to manage RAM a lot better than XP (4 gigs = smooth).

Re: Will Prey be supported in Windows Vista ?
Unbelievable! ATI has released their RTM drivers for Vista, but still no openGl support!!!!

That's it... I'm switching back to Nvidia next time I'm buying a new gfx card. I've had it with ATI and openGl problems!

True, XP was capped @ 3gigs I believe. When I had 2gigs of RAM for BF2 on my XP box it made no difference when compared to 1 gig of RAM. When I put 2 1/2 gigs in my Vista box it made a big difference, and then bumping to 4, an even bigger diff.

But still, the NVID card w/Vista beta drivers or reg drivers won't run Prey.

StonerKen- what's the secret?

You have to wait for Forceware X, I havent tried prey...the released RC2 drivers have mininmal OpenGL Support, I dont know off hand what extensions its lacking for prey.

Just your going to have to wait untill the ICV's release final RTM drivers, or beta ones that arent crap.

Re: Will Prey be supported in Windows Vista ?
Why don't the makers of prey make a patch to allow it to run in directX rather than having to use OpenGL anyway? This would bypass all these issues. I also have an ATI card in windows Vista and have just bought Prey but am unable to play it.
Is there no switch to force it to use directX/direct3d rendering instead?

Besides spending a year to re-write the whole back end renderer...no, not sure how much of the front-end would have to be re-written.

Re: Will Prey be supported in Windows Vista ?
Despite what vendor its from there will be no proper OpenGL support in Vista till the consumer launch in January. .

NVIDIA is the only video card vendor that has minimal OpenGL support, minimal as in its lacking some extensions(like FBO's).

Re: Will Prey be supported in Windows Vista ?
Got it to work finally- not as simple as just using the new nvid drivers though.

97.46 English wouldn't install, so I had to use the international version of 97.46 ...

Prey then gave me an error about gamex86.dll not being able to be copied to c:\program files\prey\base (for some reason this folder is read only even though I'm logged in as admin, I couldn't change the permissions on it.. ). So I extracted the gamex86.dll from pak0 file in the base folder to a temp folder using Winrar. Then I was able to copy gamex86.dll to c:\program files\prey\base and the game finally worked.

yes you can play Prey on Windows Vista... it is a Mircrosoft Operation system... it did say windows 2000 or xp or higher.. and Vista is higher then both.. all vista is, is an upgrade of windows xp... so yes it will work.

Re: Will Prey be supported in Windows Vista ?
I made Tommy crawl the walls on Vista-Utlimate_x64 (OEM final) with ATI's-1950 Pro GPU and their latest driver. Somewhat problematic, but somehow the Prey kicked in after starting Preyd. I also installed latest M$ DirectX-2007, just for the heck of it, since Vista installs Directx-10 API during setup. That's all folks

Hi Guys,
Managed to get Prey working in Vista by right-right clicking and selecting 'run as administrator' then you won't have the insufficient security privileges problem on first load.
The game however takes AGES to load on my machine, which is odd as it loaded quite fast when I was using XP. The game itself is silky smooth when its loaded, but each level and the initial load time is about 15mins. Anyone else have this problem? I haven't patched the game to the latest version yet though so I might try that.

What are you right-clicking? I am the only one using my computer so I would assume I am the administrator.

Re: Will Prey be supported in Windows Vista ?
I just did a full install of Vista Premium from XP Pro. Prey played great on the XP machine (ATI xt850 card) but in Vista it's laggy as all hell with the framerate it's getting. Really weird that there was such a huge decrease in performance. The machine has a gig of ram and the above mentioned card, but most importantly played PREY smoothly before the upgrade.

I have the latest Creative Audigy 2 Vista drivers and the latest Catalyst.

Any ideas?

ps: I'm using Steam whereas on XP I was using Triton
