Re: 2 weeks out, Anyone playing MultiPrey?
This could go on forever.
The bottom line is that prey is popular, but it's multiplayer isn't. It says something about the multiplayer of a game when people who already own it aren't playing it. Also, the popularity of a multiplayer game is rather important. If this few people are playing it this shortly after release, there could be virtually -nobody- playing it a year from now, and without people to play against, it pretty much doesn't even exist anymore. With so few players as it is, there are probably already people with the PC version that can't effectively play because there isn't a server close enough to them with players to get a worthwhile experience. |

Re: 2 weeks out, Anyone playing MultiPrey?
I'd have to agree with that assesment. Multiplayer has to be " Right" from the start. Any quirks or ballance issues erode the chance for long term success. Be sure that before single player is done people will give it a run. I have and although I liked the level design, performance issues abound.

The sad news is most people only like what their friends tell them to like or approve of, more people playing CS=more people drawn to it. We can all hope that someday people will grow their own mind, but it looks bleak. There's nothing wrong with PreyMP, have you seen any DM type game do well the past couple of years since CS? I have'nt, even HL2DM is'nt doing all that well, last time I played it people were actually complaining, saying stuff like "Sci-Fi sucks" and "screw this I'm going to go play CS:S" in the global chat. It seems like a new game comes out and some of these people will give it 5 minutes(if they even bother to try it at all) and then give it up because it's not like CS. There's so many people that think that's how an FPS should be and in reality, CS killed gaming now all the old-school gamers or people with any good taste for that matter are left here on MSG boards making threads like this "where is everybody?" |

Re: 2 weeks out, Anyone playing MultiPrey?
I play hl2dm quite a lot and atm I see 155 servers with players on. Compared to CS that's nothing, but there's always someone there to play, and it's nearly two years old. I can't say I've ever really seen many people complaining about it, but you see a lot of people crouching in the corner with an smg, which will always make me laugh.
The difference I suppose is that hl2dm is part of something much bigger. I would imagine people who buy CSS almost always buy it with HL2, whch obviously comes with free HL2DM. Given that CSS is the most popular multiplayer game in the world (I guess?) there's undoubtedly going to be some leakage into HL2DM from that. Prey meanwhile doesn't have that... People have to be interested in Prey alone to try the multiplayer. |

Re: 2 weeks out, Anyone playing MultiPrey?
I started Multiprey last night, did not see any players, and joined an empty server, waited there like 15 mins and noone showed up.
Face it, only few fans of Prey were expecting to play the MP game of Prey, others like me were only waiting for cool SP experience. And when it comes to SP, Prey did deliver. These days if you want a popular MP game, you have to forget SP side of the game and focus to multiplayer only. Valve is lucky to have some of the most popular MP mods to accompany their HL2. You think that anyone would play HL2DM if it would not come bundled with CS:S, and DoD:S? And DM games can still do well after CS. UT2004 did quite well, although it had more gametypes than just DM and TeamDM. And in fact CS too is a DM game, mission objectives are only there to stop players camping whole round, but still people ignore them.

Re: 2 weeks out, Anyone playing MultiPrey?
@CrimsonHead
I, for one, genuinely like Counter-Strike ever since I first encountered it's "Beta 2" on the cover disc of a gaming magazine back in 1999. The gameplay is good and it's fun... in every installment, including CS: Source. The really bad thing about Counter-Strike is the so called community. Sometimes I have the feeling that, over the years, the Counter-Strike hype attracted the most degenerate people of our planet. You could make whole behavioral studies about the decline of mankind by using CS chatlogs alone. It's that bad. Sometimes I really wonder how these creatures a capable of operating a PC in the first place. But that doesn't mean that the game is bad. It's just a sideeffect that casts a bad light on CS. |

Re: 2 weeks out, Anyone playing MultiPrey?
i can usually find a server to play on with people, as long as I will willing to pay the ping penalty. on the otherhand I also play the demo multiplayer, there are usually more people playing there.

Re: 2 weeks out, Anyone playing MultiPrey?
I find straight DM to be fun only amoungst friends. Even then, it gets boring when played too much. A little spice and twists is what we need for MutliPrey. It was one of the things I hoped HH and 2K kept in mind when they released it.
![]() CTF is a good start, but we need more gametypes. |

The wall-walking and gravity flipping is a gimick, really. In the end, it still comes down to shoot whatever is moving. It's just now you have to look above and below you. I'll admit - I stayed a bit longer in MultiPrey than in other DM games, but in the end, it didn't hold my interest long enough to satisfy. I mean, it's the 25 of July! A mere 2 weeks! I get bored of DM in about a few hours. So Prey at least got me to play their version of DM for a little over a week. That's an accomplishment. But still, why just DM and TeamDM? We are in an age of modern shooters. Prey has great SP storyline, but it is not enough to sustain replay value. A lot of people compared Prey to HL and HL2 - but you know what? I thought 3DR and HH wanted to be different? Besides, HL an HL2 took a while to play SP compared to Prey. How about awesome storyline in SP and a great MP experience to boot? Don't ignore MP, because this is where people will come back to play. It makes a good game great. I hope 3DR would do this for DNF, since it is completely under their control. We need more gametypes, and if you guys can make coop work (even though you said you wouldn't in the begining), that'd be great. Going back on your word for the better does not make you a bad company. ![]() PS: When I say gametypes, I mean like in Halo with different objectives to winning, and rule changes - Oddman Out, Juagernaught, King of the Hill, etc. I hate the way Halo plays (too slow, I suck at the controller when aiming and moving around), but I can't help but say it is a really fun game, and my friends and I will play it all day long and not get sick of it, because of these gametypes, and the fact that they are customizable, too. I hope someone in the Mod community would add something like this to Prey (and/or DNF if it doesnt ship with). Before someone scarcastic says "you do it", like you, I'm not a developer or a programmer. ![]()

major cause of tiny multiplayer audience is the stutter I think ...
