Project Icarus
New project from the "revived" Irrational Games. As far as I know we... know nothing about it so far. Teaser site below will be updated with a trailer tommorow, August 12th at 1:45 PM. Meanwhile the game has been revealed to the press today with both trailer and gameplay presentation. The latter will be released sometime in the future.

What is Icarus?

Here's a message from Ken Levine:

On Wednesday, August 11, we will be revealing Irrational Games’ new project to the press. At this special event, the press will be seeing a trailer and a live demonstration of gameplay.

On Thursday, August 12th, at 1:45 Eastern Daylight Time, we will launch the trailer for our new game at Whatisicarus.com. Our hope is that you all will see it PRIOR to reading any news in the press (which will start to come out around 15 minutes later).

Trust me, there’s a reason.

In the coming weeks, we will be releasing a video of the demonstration to the community as well. No promises on the date yet; we’re still figuring that out. You can send me a threatening PM, but it will have no effect other than to hurt my very delicate feelings.

Yea. The problems is, if the bioshock 2 team went, "WE'RE GOING TO THE SKY MOTHER ******" everyone would be pissed off. But when Ken Levine says it, it's met with applause.

That said, I agree with Crunchy Superman, this is a more exciting offering than bioshock 2's was. But the innate problem with BS2 was that it was mroe of the exact same stuff. Just as good, but not as groundbreaking.

Is the whole reason they wanted you to watch the trailer before news came out so the surprise wouldn't be ruined?

All I saw on Kotaku was "Bioshock Infinite set in the sky" and I thought "wtf? what I did just watch... WTF?" and I highly doubt my reaction would've been any different if I watched the trailer first.

I also don't get how its going to be set in the 1910's and yet it references Rapture. Yeah its only a teaser and it more than likely won't even reference the original Bioshock at all, but still.

Shack interview with Ken Levine. That might sound like I'm blindly accepting whatever they throw but I agree with him on using the name and so on. It goes along with my own opinions I've voiced a couple of times.

Also an official note from the man himself.

Kinda funny though; he talks about how "We didn't want to take the easy way out and just make another game based in Rapture" and stuff along those lines, and yet another team in 2K already did that. Haha

this proves that the Bioshock IP is dynamic and not just stuck in one place although IMO Rapture still has lots of room for improvement.

But i fear that this might be a carbon copy of Bioshock 1 and 2, dytopia knowone knows about but the city falls because of rich and poor, it has a tyrannical, paranoid dictator.

For me, the darkness and claustrophobia of Rapture were a huge part of the game's atmosphere. Rapture has to be under the sea, dammit! And if any millionaire can just build a utopia in the air (or anywhere else he wants to), then Rapture loses some of its uniqueness.

It wasn't thought up or funded or made by one single billionaire or anything like that and kept in secret. It was built to showcase the bustling progress of America and how its evolving. Its a city shown publically for everyone to see, instead of tucked away and accessible only to those chosen. Though eventually, people start to take it over, and it becomes Death Star like instead of a thriving city for everyone to flock to.

And thats when you come in. It sounds a LOT like Bioshock, but thats fine by me. I'm glad there's Bioshock sequels that are about Rapture, and Bioshock sequels that are completely new concepts.

Bioshock Infinite
Trailer: http://www.bioshockinfinite.com/trailer.php

Quote:
Players will be cast as detective Booker DeWitt, who is hired to locate and rescue a woman from the strife-ridden city.

Columbia itself will feature many familiar ideas and mechanics from the previous BioShock games, such as giant robot-like enemies and the use of Plasmid-style power-ups. Environmental hazards will also return, with preview materials showing the player electrocuting crowds of enemies once they have been soaked in water.

Infinite will also mark a departure from the hallmarks of the previous game however, putting players in the role of a specific character and having them team up with an NPC for the majority of the adventure. Also, it's not underwater.
I like the idea of setting the game in 1912 (not exactly an era I'm overly familar with) but... is it really necessary to call this Bioshock? the big daddy in the fish tank was a nice touch, but leave it at that.

That's exactly what I was thinking earlier today.

They want to take the concepts of BioShock and run with them without restricting themselves to whatever was in the original game. Sure, they could call it something else. But like Sang says, even despite all the differences, people would automatically notice that there's something fundamentally like BioShock about that. And they would complain, oh they've retextured BioShock.

I've onced asked what people think that sequels should be, more of the same or reinvention. I chose the later and Infinite is a good example. I mean, sure, some games are just fine with just expanding them. But with a game like BioShock...

Some people might know that I was absolutely psyched about BioShock. And I still am. I'm a huge fan of it. And you know what? I haven't even played BioShock 2 yet. Why? Because it's more of the same. Sure it's probably good... but it's just more of the same. I can't be bothered enough. And that's the reason why I don't really care about BS2 but I'm already psyched about Infinite. I love Rapture, I love the story, the characters but that story is done. And Infinite hopefully takes the core concepts and expands them in different directions, different places, different stories.

I don't yet know whether it's gonna appeal to me, what exactly are the new ideas... but I'm all for the concept of doing something fresh under the same name.

My thinking is, if Bioshock just serves as a title for a very different adventure (like Final Fantasy) then that’s great - it gives the writers and the devs more freedom.

But… if they attempt to add continuity like Capcom did when they revamped the resi series (which went from creepy memos divulging the plot to ’OUR PLAN’ written in caps on the screen) it's just going to create a huge web of nonsense.

Although bioshocks only concept so far is a far off fantastical city but somehow it falls and is now a shadow of its former self.
