Duke Nukem 2 iOS
So 3D Realms and Interceptor have announced Duke Nukem 2 for iOS. It seems it is a reverse engineered port with the source code for the game being lost. In an interview Frederik Schreiber says that they have entered into "agreements on other games." with 3D Realms. Check out that interview, some screenshots and the reveal trailer here.

Duke is only wearing sunglasses in the remade cover art.
It's a shame that it's just a reverse-engineered port, I was hoping for a modernized remake, with Duke wearing sunglasses and voiced by Jon St. John.

Adding sunglasses to the sprites is possible. I've already done that using my Duke Nukem II editor. I could also add Jon St. John's voice to the Intro if someone's got a sound file of him saying "I'm back!" (and I'm not talking about the joke video Joe Siegler posted in 2011).

From what I've heard, the iOS port uses the same file formats as the original game, so it shouldn't be much of a problem to get them to work in the DOS version. I don't think you can just extract the files from the App, so you'll have to wait for Interceptor to release the modified files. Or you can use "K1n9_Duk3's Enormous Tool" to edit the sprites yourself.
The sprite files (ACTORS.MNI and ACTRINFO.MNI) from the shareware version and the full game are identical, so if you've got a modified version of them, you can just copy them into your Duke2 folder and it should work. |

Note: I'm not that much of a pixel artist, so I didn't add sunglasses to the intro and cutscene images. I only modified all the Duke sprites, including those in the fullscreen images in the help menu, and gave them the sunglasses that my Avatar is wearing. I also changed the end screens for episode 2 and 3, as they had some glitches in the original version, but I didn't add sunglasses to those images. If anyone wants to finish my work, you can use this zip file to get started. It contains a PNG file of every in-game image that shows Duke in one way or another, excluding the FLIC intro animations. |
