Hey Wamplet, do me a favour. On your next playthrough of Thief II, take your sweet ass time with it and try to be as thorough as possible.
There are Bonus Objectives your Objectives Menu won't show until you stumble onto them. The first mission has one, the Blood Trail mission has one, Return to The Lost City has one as well as some others... My most recent playthrough (about a month ago) had me clocked in at 18h 51m, Loot 25,555 and Damage Taken: 1 (you have no idea how angry I was). Took my slightly under a month to beat it.

Like I've said many times: Thief II will always be my favourite game of all time.

I think it's safe to assume T4 will also be using the TR Legend/Anniversary engine, which is the same path Ion Storm took with DX:IW and TIII.

If T4 comes out before 2010, I won't have much hope in it at all, but I personally think the TR:L/A engine is a good choice as I thought TR:A was a beautiful game.

Unless they have been working on T4 for quite some time in absolute secrecy, I'm pretty sure it'll take a while until it comes out. If they even make a fourth one. It's just a rumor so far.

You using Vista? Creative created an OpenAL wrapper for EAX to work on Vista, it's called Creative ALchemy.. however you have to pay $20 for it. I personally think it's a ripoff considering people who have already bought the damn Audigy/X-Fi card should be able to use EAX (arguably the reason people buy a damn Audigy/X-Fi card) in Vista without paying extra. It's only $10 but still, it's the principle of the thing.

No, I'm using XP. Vista would be too much for my (Achtung! Sarcasm!) high end machine. I don't know what it is. Won't recognize my crappy onboard soundchip.
What's worse is that I have video driver problems. As soon as actually load a map, I get an error message telling me that my card doesn't report free memory correctly. It seems as if the game won't believe my VGA has that much RAM.
It looks like I have to use old driver to get it working. It's a known problem with the first two Thief games and the current drivers don't work with an existing fix. What great fun. I swear, once I have the cash for a new system, I'll keep my old one just to run Win 98 on it. The Windows downwards compability is seriously lacking.

If you have an nvidia card, you may need to use the 92 drivers, not the 160s

Crap, i totally forgot about that on my end.

I will see if the thief 1 and 2 is playable on my computer.

If not i can fall back on my old P4, which shouldnt have a problem running it.

Oh, that's the first place I checked. I only need old drivers though. I'm not sure how old the ones in my "archives" are. However, it sucks big time to switch drivers when I want to play.

Help! I only get a black screen or Direct 3D Device does not accurately report texture memory usage.
Please Note:
If you are using an nVidia card with drivers in the 9x.xx range then the fixes listed below will not work. At present the only solution is to downgrade your drivers to versions in the 8x.xx range or below.

An error message that pops up when starting a level in Thief and Thief 2. You may not get an error message, you may see only a black screen. It primarily occurs on Nvidia Graphics cards running driver versions 5x.xx and above although there are several reports of it occuring on ATI 9xxx cards using new drivers.
If you are running Thief 2 you should remove the semicolon ( from the line ;safe_texture_manager in the file user.cfg which you should open with Notepad.
If you are running Thief 1 you should download one of the patches linked below that corresponds to your version and overwrite the installed Thief EXE with the one from the ZIP file.

But seriously, the driver switch isn't that big of an issue unless you switch between games you are currently playing often and at least one needs newer drivers. Switching itself including reboot shouldn't take longer than 5 minutes. Just make a shortcut to the installer.

I am tempted to see if my computer will run it, but i have a feeling it won't, without the older drivers.

edit: Ok, i just installed thief 1 and the menu and cutscene intro plays fine, but when i load up the training missions, it gives the texture error.

I tried the DDFIX patch, but instead of crashing, the mission starts, but all i see is the health bar and that's it. i can hear stuff, but i can't see anything.

I am gonna see if it will run on my old P4 later.

Man, you guys really aren't looking hard enough. I've got both Thief Gold and Thief II running flawlessly. Thief Gold actually looks better because I have it running in 32 bit. I just ordered System Shock 2 because I now know it still works with a few fan made fixes.

It didn't seem to fully work for me.

I used the GUI and dumped it in the thief 1 folder

what exactly did you do?

I ran the gui, and set it to 1280x1024. should i try a lower res? maybe that is the prob.

when i run Thief 1, only 640x480 shows up.

I had to change it manually for mine, which fixed the 'dark screen with sound and health' problem, but I do have Thief Gold which might be where the difference is.

All I did was install the game, replace the .exe with the pre-patched version, threw the DDFix.dll files into my main TG folder and booted it up. Not too sure what's missing/wrong...

I have Thief Platinum, which contains Thief 1 and 2.

It doesn't have thief Gold Expansion. It's version 1.33 i believe.

Also, when the gUI comes up, do i need to check the "Video fix"?

Video fix is for the inevitable 'cutscenes/briefings stop playing' bug which happens after you've been playing the game for awhile.

Try to get your hands on Thief Gold. The Mage Towers mission is one of my top 3 missions of the whole series. The Opera House mission has some of the funniest conversations and a lot of carpet jumping. Downwinders Thieves' Guild is one of the hardest and biggest missions of the series and is also the mission where my signature can be found.

Well, after i had just posted, i decided to do the ddfix with 1024x768 for Thief 1 and it works at that resolution.

Just got past the prison level and am on the bonehoard level now.

for reference, on Thief 1, i was selecting 1280x1024 i think, when it wasn't working for me.

When i lowered it in the patch program, it seemed to be fine.

I can't find my Thief disc. I've been searching for the past couple days.... it's not there. I can look and see Thief: Deadly Shadows, I can see the box to Thief 2.... but I can't find the first game anywhere.

I simply bought Thief Gold from some d/l store. It sucks a bit because I can properly burn the game on CD but on the other hand I paid only 10 USD. Compared to all other offers for the rare Thief Gold (not the original version I might add) I found, it's still the best.

Well, since I have to save money for my new appartment, I can't spend much money on games and this is the cheapest way for me to get Thief Gold, which I'm looking for for quite some time. The german version I don't want anyways is nearly impossible to get unused and importing that game turned out in the past simply too expensive for my taste. I mean, the game is nearly 10 years old now.
The store is not so great as I couldn't choose my instalation directory and making back ups is somewhat dubious but it's cheap and I had it immediatly. I found, I bought, I'm playing.

All the thief talk kinda died down, with GTA being released no doubt, but i just finished Thief 1 a few days ago and the levels weren't actually nearly as bad as i had remembered them, especially the second time around.

I had remembered they seemed underground and more abstract than above ground, but most of them had their purpose and were pretty decent after the second play-through.

I still think the Thief 2 levels are much better though.

I really wanted to play through all three again... but that won't happen, not until I can replace the first game.

I think Thief II blows The Dark Project out of the water and here's something you probably didn't know...I played Thief II first!

When you get to First City Bank and Trust. Explore the level fully, all 3 or 4 floors. The mission is flippin' huge and you just might stumble upon the conversation between Benny and the Grand Master of the Bank...

I have the thief-circle.net site up when i play and flip back and forth throught heir walkthrough after i clear out most of the levels to make sure i catch most of the stuff i need to. \o

I don't follow it, but if i get real stuck and need to figure something out or can't get past a point i will read it word for word. I am mostly sticking to their secrets section though. i skim that before the mission and then plow through and then go back and see if i missed anything . Not trying to go for 100% loot or anything, but i am trying to get about 90% or so, that way i have a good amount to spend in case i need it.

Although, so far all i have bought are the tips. I don't need them and walkthroughs will detail them, but i think it's more "real" if i buy them.

I left off on Thief 2 and need to finish it up as well. I'm on the mission where you cover the rooftops and go to the party. Life of the Party, i think.

After Thief 2, I will have finished all 3 once again. I'm hoping for some more news on the new game.
