Hey man, don't diss someone for preferring to play games with a controller instead of a keyboard and mouse, to each his own, maybe he's unable to buy a 360 or just isn't interested in consolegaming in general plus the PC game will simply look beter than the 360 one, depeding on your PC setup, and run at 60FPS instead of 30FPS.

Re: Prey PC gamepad / controller support???
I have Xbox 360, and I use my controller for my PC games, and I would much rather get the PC version, cause my PC wipes the floor with a 360. and the games are much cheaper, and upgradeable, and mod able. I know ur not dissing, but buying any game for a console when ya can get PC is spoiling.
So hopefully the people that dumped $10 million or whatever it is to make the game, can spare a few more bucks to make it better with gamepad support.

*sidenote : since the game has already been configured to work with an Xbox controller.. I just feel cheated not getting it with the PC version.

Tech requirements on the full version are the same as the demo. Except more hard drive space.

In other words, no, the full version doesn't have support for that.

ok... so why? Why is there no support? Whoever said "Umm.. I dont think we should have gamepad support on PC..." should be fired... I would gladly come help code your game to read gamepads, just send me an e-mail... and if I didnt have to eat or sleep on a bed, I would do it for free.

The reason is because there were game balance changes that had to be made between the versions to cope with the fact that playing this sort of game with a gamepad is less accurate and offering both means of control in one version would be complicated.

I do agree they should have done it anway, and I do play most PC games with a gamepad, but definitely not First Person Shooters.

Have you tried one of the keyboard emulation utilities like Joy2Mouse?

http://atzitznet.no-ip.org/Joy2Mouse3/index.html

It will allow you to program keystrokes and mouse movement to joystick axes and buttons. I wouldn't recommend trying to replace the mouse for aiming, but I prefer a gamepad for movement over the keyboard.

See link for my config.
http://www.albumtown.com/data/e2d524...9_p1042321.jpg

Of course, as long as the game only supports keyboard input of certain functions, like walking, the movement will still be jerky, but that can't be helped.

If you're not interested in using a third party app, most PC gamepads support some axes/button remapping through their "profiler" software. You might want to download the software from their website first and read the user manual or help file first to make short they will do what you need.

I take everything back. Its kinda fun really .. i have tryed that pinnacle game profiler (really works great .. shame its not freeware) And if you just want to relax and play from your bed it is better then mouse and keyboard.

and it really is playable actually when you configure it right.

There is no joypad support for prey. Try Xpadder. This software will "enable" gamepad support to any PC game.

Quick information about it
Use your controller to play:
PC games with poor/no joystick support
DOS games in a Windows DOS box
Non-PC emulated games
Shockwave and Java internet games
Games with no left-handed option

I have the same problem. I just bought a HUGE computer system, it's burly and I spent a great deal of money on it. Why anyone wouldn't want to use a gamepad on an FPS is beyond me. Plus it's a laptop.. so I want to play Prey with my 360 controller at Starbucks.. is that to much to ask?

What kind of problems are you experiencing? Have you tried to use the Logitech Profiling software to map keystrokes to the button/axes?

I never recommend trying to replace the mouse for aiming, but you if you really want to, you can try joys2mouse. (It's free).

Hi Guys,

First and foremost, it's a crying' shame that PREY does not have gamepad support - nigh-on all my fave shooters do. After reading through this thread and agreeing with the majority of complaints, I have long appreciated the 'PC' gaming opinions concerning 'gamepads'; it appears most old-school PC gamers hate 'em/don't use 'em, but alot of newer PC gamers (like myself ) do. And there's gonna be a whole lot more to come with the likes of the 360 and PS3 drawing alot of the crowd to the PC as a more higher-end 'console' I'm actually a convert from console gaming and having used a pad from the MegaDrive upwards, when I fully came over to the PC 18 months ago, I simply couldn't get used to mouse/keyboard movement etc.

Nonetheless, my fave game FEAR, even when a PC only exclusive (now destined for the 360), HAD support for gamepads and I've also found a few games although not configured for pads by default, a little tweak of the games config/ini file will allow a pad to be mapped with that game

But when PREY hit my PC it was surprising that it didn't have any gamepad support at all, especially (as someone pointed out above) it was also coded for the 360

So I do ask if this could be addressed in a future patch for the game? PLEASE!! Pretty Please???

Anyway, yes BigBat, I got my wireless Rumblepad II configured for the game, nearly as good as if the game had pad support. However, it took alot of tweaking between the games config file and the pad's profiler to get it pretty much spot-on. So if you want any tips, please feel free to ask away. HTH mate.

Anyway, best regards and a big thanks to all at 3DR for such an awesome game - even without gamepad support...

FPS aren't meant to be played on controllers. I consider it a good feature that the PC version of Prey doesn't have support for controllers.

According to which constitutional law? Moreover, the thousands of gamers who stood outside gamestores in the late of night (whether I agree with such actions is another question ) to buy Halo2 is a tantamount contradiction of you above claim.

Surely it is a simple case of each to their own, eh?

Hey guys...

There is a very easy solution if anyone has trouble playin' the game with te keybord (like myself), It will cost ya a little money but will bring you great satisfaction.........try playin' with a nostromo n52 speedpad, it works very well for me. Now I only use the speedpad and my mouse.

Re: Prey PC gamepad / controller support???
While I'm very much against gamepads for FPS, I think the one big shining thing about the PC is it's ability offer a greater range of options for the gamer. It's a bad thing IMO that Prey does not support gamepads. It's a feature I do not use, however, so I can't say I'd want to press the issue with the publisher myself.

You can't use Halo 2 as an arguement. They were just fanboys waiting for the craptastic sequel to an okay game.

Yeah... they were blinded by the fact that a good game on a system because no other game like it exists there doesn't really mean the game is good right there.

I'd like Xbox 360 gamepad support just for fun though.

Err.... I got Halo 2 because I thought it was a good game, just like the first one, not because I thought it was one of a kind or anything.

I am willing to bet that if you would scientifically sample 1000 MK players vs the another 1000 GP players, let each one play the other, the MKs will prevail.

I have always played all shooters with a joystick. From Doom to quake, q2, q3a halflife, hl2, right up to FEAR. I need/want the trigger in my hand. Judging by the .pak files and the style of .cfg in this game, it is a quake (3 or 4) engine game and there is joystick/gamepad support in there somewhere.

edit: I see now it is a doom3 engine (just installed Prey today). I did play doom3 with a joystick so it should be possible with Prey.

Just download Xpadder. Are people in this thread ignoring my old post above? I've finished Prey on PC with my Xbox 360 controller due to xpadder.

Xpadder will enable any control pad for any PC game.

Thx Steve. I will give it a try though I do not use pads. I use joysticks. The logitech extreme 3d has been my fave for the past few years.

I find mouse and keyboard to be way to easy, takes a lot more skill to aim with two analog sticks than just a mouse. I like a challenge and simple point and click wont help me or any other hardcore people.

Re: Prey PC gamepad / controller support???
I highly prefer keyboard and mouse for shooters but I don't begrudge anyone the choice of using a gamepad if they want to. A thing that is unfortunate about games like Prey (and other Doom 3 engine games) on the computer not supporting gamepads is you can't do the hybrid method (gamepad and mouse) natively. I've played a few games that natively support gamepads that way and it's a pretty good way to play them.

There's one unfortunate thing about using keyboard emulation software. Mapping WSAD to the thumbstick doesn't give you analog movement. Xpadder may someday (it seems to be on the developers to-do list) get the functionality so that you can make the movement stick more analog. For example you could set it up so up to 50% would be the WSAD keys and then pressing it all the way would add the shift modifier making you run.

For games like platformers and racing games I don't mind a gamepad but for shooters nothing beats the mouse for me for aiming. Using anything else is just masochistic for me I don't care if it's supposed to be more challenging or for hardcore players. I don't think being "too good" with a certain type of controller is a bad thing and keyboard and mouse hasn't stopped games from being challenging and fun for me. Like I said though I don't care what other people use it doesn't affect me... I just use what I prefer.

However I may be alone in this but I don't like using the same kind of controls for every single game. I don't insist on playing all games with the keyboard and mouse nor with a gamepad or even an arcade (fighter style) joystick (there are some games prefer playing with that, mainly older arcade\console games). For me it's the right tool for the right job.

Xpadder can make a custom controller profiles which you can use with just about any controller. So I'm sure you may be able to make one for a joystick as well as a gamepad... but don't hold me to that. I don't know if it supports any extra features a joystick like that has.
