Thumbs up Re: Proper Duke3D Roland SC-55 Music Pack (At Last!)
My first computer from back in 1998 had a SB AWE 64, and Duke3D sounded awesome on it. I played Duke3D one last time on that computer before dismantling it in 2000.

I've tried all sorts of soundfonts and so-forth since then, but the Duke3D tracks never sounded right.

This kicks ass. Thanks for putting this pack together.

I was playing Duke again last night and I had to pause and go open the music folder and feed a few of those ogg files into VLC.

Storming!!!

I remember my dissapointment when I got my new Win95 machine and I thought WOW, this is going to kick ass for a DukeStation! Then I fired it up and it was one of the biggest downers when the this flat, toneless crap came out of the speakers.

I used to have an AWE 64 in my old PC and it sounded awesome.

Thanks again for making a quantum leap in the overall Duke experience.

I'm not sure you realize quite what "quantum" means..

Spoiler:

ergo, while to most it would sound like a huge change, technically, it doesn't have to be.

But enough of this off-topicness now.

Just felt like pointing that out, no offense intended.
How he meant was that it was actually a large leap, but I felt like being a bit anal about it.

On another note, I do agree that it's nice to hear these tracks.. Although, to be honest, I haven't heard them like that when I first played Duke 3D, so I can't really tell much. ^_^;

Could you put up the addon ones you made as well?

Here's a pack containing the MIDIs from SW, Blood, NAM, and WWII GI.

sw_blood_nam_ww2gi_midi.7z

I know SW and Blood have CD tracks, but it would still be cool to have these.

Great idea! Also if possible please do FLAC versions of the midi only musics from sw (theres two musics that only appears in the demo version of the game: morse kodo and 254mm), please

Re: Proper Duke3D Roland SC-55 Music Pack (At Last!)
You could just upload the wave files. I could make them into high compression FLACs.

For reference, the MIDI files that I extracted out of the GRP have different names than the ones found in the goodies\midi directory on the CD.

GRP - CD - Title (extracted from MIDI file)
THEME.MID - OKINOWWA.MID - Okinoww!a
E1L01.MID - EVRYOFF.MID - Everybody Off
E1L02.MID - MORSE.MID - Morse Kodo
E1L03.MID - 254MM.MID - 254mm
E1L04.MID - A10TION.MID - Attention

New submission. A (the) track from Powerslave beta, 2 from SW beta, Legend of the Seven Paladins full, LameDuke, and rejects from Lee Jackson.

midis_pslavebeta_swbeta_lo7p_lameduke_ljackson.7z

TX, you should add support for EMIDI, by Lee Jackson.

The named tracks are:

E1L01(a).MID - Taiko Recall
E1L05.MID - Pyroclastic Flow

DARKMATT.MID - Dark Matter
SUPFNORD.MID - SuperFnord
Whomp (proto).mid - Whomp (early version)

BROWNEYE.MID - Brown Eyed Girl
MISTACHE.MIS - Mist Ache

note: the SW beta also included the shareware MIDIs
note2: LameDuke also has FASTWAY from ROTT, not included
note3: Lee Jackson also had FISHPOLKA from ROTT as a rejected track, not included
note4: stuff in red was added by me

YES. Currently the MIDIs don't use loop points in eDuke32 like they do in regular DOS, for instance.

That gives me an idea, how about being able to set a loop point for .ogg as well in the .def file - maybe we should request this of TerminX (but i wouldnt until Polymer is done)

Re: Proper Duke3D Roland SC-55 Music Pack (At Last!)
Unfortunately when I loaded up eDuke32 on my PC with a SB Live value sound card, it sounded like absolute CRAP!
I googled a lot, and came across the concept of sound fonts. I downloaded many sound fonts, and found every SC-55 sound font I could, and every sound font I could recognize, like Gravis Ultrasound, Yamaha XG or whatever. Some sounded better than others, but they all sucked.
Then eventually I saw a post about someone having no sound, and needing to select their windows MIDI device. I finally switched from the SBLive synth to the Microsoft GM synth. THANK GOD. Duke MIDIs again!

What a waste of time that was. I think it would be good to add to the FAQ that if the MIDIs play like crap, you should check what MIDI device you're using. I didn't even know there was a MS midi synth. I thought they were all hardware or implemented at driver level. (device specific)

In the mean time I've downloaded the eDuke32 music pack, and will check that out.

It's weird to talk about MIDIs in Lameduke because I never did get sound to work at all for it.

Also, a note about the Blood MIDIs. They all seem to be mono. All of the channels are center-panned which makes it sound very bland and boring. So unless there exists some better MIDIs from the game with stereo-panned channels I'll have to take some creative liberties and pan them myself.

I'm going to reupload the add-on SC-55 pack from Life's a Beach and Nuclear Winter since it was on my now seemingly non-existent website and therefore not available anymore. I'll wait, though, so I can add Whomp_Beta and the other tracks in the same archive.
