Tachy Goes to Coventry

There is a feature in vBulletin here called "Tachy Goes to Coventry". The name itself doesn't mean anything, it's some sort of inside joke with the vB developers. What is interesting though is what the feature does. It's essentially a "global ignore". If someone is put in this feature, they can post and post and post all they want, and nobody sees their posts except themselves and the admins/moderators. Even the admin/mods don't see the full post unless they manually override. Admins are presented with a message that says "The Admin has decided that so and so will be quiet for awhile". You guys as regular users would never see that, but that's what admins/mods see when a person in Tachy posts something.

Anyway, the reason for me posting about all this is...

When I walked out the door at 3DR just about a year ago, there was one long standing user who was notorious for causing problems and posting abusive (but not exactly banworthy either) messages. I put that user in Tachy in May of 2009, and surprisingly enough they've NEVER figured out that not a single person has replied to any of their posts in a year, as nobody else has seen them. They still post here. I wonder if they have any idea who they are.

I mean, wouldn't you figure out in a year that not a single person has ever replied to you?

I'm not sure, but I have had a few people be mean to me. From what I remember, every time I made a thread with myself and them appearing in it, they were not very nice to me. I won't name names publicly, but if you want their names, PM me.

Thing is, they could be sat there right now posting "It must be me!" and we would not know, or even better, they are sat there going "Muahahaha, that stupid tachy member, what a complete nincompoop! Hehehehehee" not knowing it was them either. In theory we could probably find out if we could convince the server to send us the user database somehow or the entirity of posts and topics contained on it - not that I am about to attempt any such thing, having recently tried to set up forum software a lot like this I can appreciate how much work Joe must have put into it.

I also ofter wonder if I've been on the list, though rather than being ignored, threads I post in just seem to die, even ones I didn't start.

That's something I've wondered about over the years: If posting for the sole purpose of getting other ppl to reply is trolling, does that mean that anyone that wants to see other ppl reply to their posts (which is probably most of us) has a little bit of troll in them?

Most of us have other motivations (getting a problem solved, finding like-minded ppl, etc) but wanting to see other ppl reply is right up there. Look at how many times ppl refer to themselves as "Thread killers" and wondering if they're on everyone else's bozo lists.

At any rate, I wonder if the offender just goes through the boards being an unpleasant douche, not caring if anyone notices or replies, or if he/she thinks everyone is simply practicing "Don't feed the trolls", and that someday, after yet another day of trolling, everyone will break down and flame the crap out of him/her, giving him/her the validation that all trolls seek.
