Re: Question about Jon St. John / Duke's Voice
Isn't voice work one of the very last things to be put into a game?

Im not bashing here..

Most people who arent into game development, simply dont realise how long it actually takes to voiceover an entire game, plus all the other unfinished work that remains to be done.

So naive.... Its almost sad..
Where have you been the past 10 years?
Or do you still think we are in 1998, where the promised release date was?

Because 3Drealms, tend to keep what they promise, release wise. We all know that, and shall therefore never doubt...

Well, you could speed up the process by skipping all the remaining actors voices but Duke and replace them by loquendo voices!

haven't you guys heard? They are going to reuse all the sounds from Duke3D.

although, seriously, that would be a quick and easy (and dirty) way to get a lot of stuff done (providing that the original high quality stuff still is around). Also, who is to say that none of the sounds from the previous versions exist? Those trailers we saw in 98 and 01 had some sounds etc. Some voice work may have been done back then...and it could still be used today.
Just saying.

I wouldn't count on it Fibbles. They they have scrapped all material from prevoius builds.

Maybe not, if we reffer to the sounds and voices, but as I said, I wouldn't count on it.

George (and possibly Joe) is the only one here knowing that answer. And I can't see him around

I don't remember them saying they scrapped *everything* from previous builds, they just said to assume they don't/never existed.
That is, if you hear a line from the trailers in 98/01 assume it was remade since then.

Benefits:

For Players: even more legendary experience.

For 3D Realms: 15+ million sales milestone is guaranteed. (of course if enough commercials too, and i say 15m cause i never saw other PC game beat it noticeably, it might be even higher at the end)

I think it can be done, 3D Realms i know your excited about this idea i can feel it.

EDIT: forget it , we've sorted this issue out

I'd have no problem with them using a pile of the original voice bites or whatever you call them, and even a few of the sound effects in the environment. I'd like it

3-5 months? Even Deus Ex' voiceovers probably got done in a couple of weeks at most. DN3D 2 days maybe? The recording, that is.

recording doesnt take THAT long. but a while. U could record a whole level's worth of dialouge in a day.

Im no pro at this but I know its not THAT long.

And If Jon does not do the voice Im out. But 3DR would be absolutely stupid not to put Jon's voice in. He is the King baby!

Should check out his website. His theme tune KICKS ASS! I reload the page to enjoy it again.

I hope recording starts soon...I mean if 3DR is dealing with menu and HUD design, I would guess they are far enough advanced to begin with the voice work too.

At what point will it become a question of whether Jon St. John is likely to live long enough to do the voice acting? How old is he now? 50? Life expectancy is low 70s for USA men, so will he see DNF released?

If you wanna go by that, will the developers themselves live long enough to get their own game released?

Smile voice acting
I hope I'm right that there isn't already a thread about voice acting in DNF.

Jon St. John will return for performing the Duke voice, thats a given I guess.

But whats up with other characters in the game, do they also get quality voices?! I mean in the 2001 trailer there was general Graves, strippers, Gus, EDF soldiers etc...I heard DNF will have a AAA-plot, so I wonder about this part. If there are new characters in the game by now with heavy voice acting, do they get enough effort in the dev cycle?!

I hope they do get an effort. Voice acting is sometimes overlooked (can be due to budget restraints) or devs thinking it's okay to pump out sub quality voice acting.

Valve did an absolute wonderful job with Half Life 2, ep1 and ep2

Personally, I thought Prey's voice acting was the best in an FPS. For an RPG I would pick Diablo 1.

Basically you need people that can become the character.

I'd be disappointed if the voice acting turned out to be average for all the supporting characters in the game. HL2 had suitable voice acting, so hopefully we get something along those lines for DNF.
