I've seen this one before. There are a TON of versions out there that will probably never be known...

Cool find. It looks like the episode 1 level 8 from the game.

I thought those things were robots and not piloted by people/things.

For anybody that hasn't seen George's twitter in a while, he confirms that was boxart for a European version of DN1.

Awesome cover, though I've never seen it before. It looks very 90's comic book-ish, which makes sense given the time period. I love that it's clearly based on that one level in the game, too. It's a neat touch, which makes one think the artist probably actually played the game (unlike with a lot of those older covers, where they clearly didn't).

I agree with ZuljinRaynor, though, that it's interesting how they depict the jumping techbots as being piloted; I always pictured them as being very similar to the ED-209 in Robocop.

More specifically a shareware version.

There were quite a lot of boxes like this produced back in the early 90's by shareware companies. They made their own art. One of my project ideas I had for history at the end of my time at 3DR was to go around and collect all these things and release them in an art project, but that obviously fell apart when 3DR did.

I own 2 copies of that Boxart

They both have different titles, Duke Nukem and Duke Nukum, these guys must have been distributing with Apogee before they got the Duke Nukem name trademarked.

This may be why:
Quote:
Why does my copy of Duke Nukem say "Duke Nukum"?
There is frequently a great deal of confusion over the correct spelling of one of Apogee's most prized characters, Duke Nukem. The original spelling for the name was "Duke Nukem"; however, during the code fix stage between v1.0 and v2.0 of the original game, Apogee found a character overseas named "Duke Nukem" that was thought to be copyrighted. So, for v2.0 of the original Duke game, the name was changed to "Duke Nukum." Then, during the programming of the next Duke Nukem game (Duke Nukem II), it was discovered that the character they found overseas was not copyrighted after all -- and so the original name was reinstated. "Duke Nukem" is also the spelling used in all successive games that featured the character.
The spellings "Duke Nuke 'em," "Duke Nuke'um," "Duke Nuke'm," "Duke Nuk'em" or other variations are not, and were never, correct. The correct spelling of the game is "Duke Nukem".

I also collect early Duke Nukem package variants... seeing the Nukem vs Nukum is always interesting to me.

Here are some of mine...
