Phew, this is a tough one. It is hard to think of a game that is not only similar in gameplay but also style. I will just throw out some suggestions based on other third person action games that I have enjoyed:

The new Tomb Raider games, MDK 2, Hitman games, and potentially the upcoming Alan Wake. Any other ideas?

Maybe the EL Matador game and the Jonh Woo Stranglehold are the must similar games. But Max Payne is really unique.

Hitman: Blood Money.

Both Max Payne and Hitman are third person shooters, have great storylines, and they're critically acclaimed.

Total Overdose, the True Crime series, Mafia, Red Dead Revolver to an extent, possibly Just Cause.

Gungrave and Gungrave OD for the ps2 are both stylish action games with slowmotion gun diving. Great stuff.

Also, if you have Half-Life, the multiplayer mods Action Half-Life and The Specialists both feature action diving and fun gunplay. These mods aren't third person by default, although The Specialists does have a third person mode.

Yeah, but Hitman is a stealth game...

that's so un-Max-Payneish.

Checked all of them that have a demo but did'nt like any of them. Nope, not much around that come up to Max's standards, except perhaps Thief and Half life. Still, I'm open to any more suggestions!

Well, it's really a shooter/RPG hybrid but my vote goes to Mass Effect.

I thought Scarface: The World Is Yours might be a bit like Max. But then I realized it was so crap that they did'nt even release a demo and I have never heard any other gamer even mention it.

I love Pacino and so considered buying it but then I saw some gameplay on youtube with Pacino cutting people's heads off with a chainsaw I thought that was one step too far for Pacino and one step too far far for me.
Never happened in the movie, Pacino would never have agreed to the scene.

There's another game called 'The Godfather' and again no demo and I've never heard anyone talking about it.

Kane and Lynch has a demo. It is a little bit like Max Payne in that it is a gritty 3rd person shooter with a great story and unique characters.

I tried the demo of Kane and Lynch a couple of times and could never work out what to do as the controls could not be reset and were incomplete. I was to scale over a balocony but there was no obvious way to do it so it all ended on the rooftop for me. If the developers are too lazy to get the demo right why would I bother to take a chance on the game?

Just highlighted for me how absolutly brilliant Max was.

Fahrenheit/Indigo Prophecy feels kind of similar to Max Payne in its grittiness and atmosphere, but has vastly different gameplay. Might still interest you.

Hey thanks Nimoy for your suggestion. I have the horrible windows Vista and that might be why I downloaded the demo three times from three different sources and it would not open. I did however watch some YouTube clips of the gameplay and it's not really my type of game, I'm not into puzzles, but I'd say anyone who is would enjoy it.
