Will Duke make One-Liners at picking up weapons etc.?

Hmm not so sure. As it looks like in the game there will be also women(Bombshell) so it's not so sure that Duke will have a chance to get the word

What about if the DNF comes with option to write your own one liners. You know using something like the programs that when you write something and they read it with voice. I think it will be cool - especially in multi-player.

You mean a kind of Text-to-speech type thing? Always funny, because the voice inadvertently comes off as emotionless or disinterested. Especially funny when you get them to read porn.

Probably not ideal for one-liners in a computer game. You don't want Duke to sound like GlaDOS's long lost brother or something, do you?

The modern Text-to-speech engines are very good at reading English text and does not sound so funny and emotionless. The emotionless IMO it's not so hard to avoid. They can make Duke speech in different emotions and you say which words with which emotion to be read.

I think Duke would say a one-liner when first picking up a weapon. I remember he does it in DN:MP when picking up the shotgun. It was cool.

Well, the last ones I heard were from not long ago, and at best sounded like someone reading a text book out loud. Yes, the pitch changing was good, and they even added little effect, like breath for example. They still lacked emotion, though. Imagine a player proclaiming "I'm going to rip your head off" spoken in the same voice as someone reading a technical document about the weight to mass ratio involved in the air speed of a laden swallow.

Besides, these t2s engines take a fair whack of resources to sound good. I think I'd rather have those resources put towards the game instead.

If it actually was in the game (which i doubt) it'd be in the menu so you'd define your one-liners when not playing. They would be created once and be played in the game. This way no more reasourced are needed than the one liners by St John.

Some t2s systems understand the International Phonetic Alphabet as well. this way you can use words that are not so common and usually not known to the t2s software. and you can also alter the way Duke would say it.

But the problem I see is that the implementation of this would be much work for 3DRealms. Its way easyier to think of great one liners instead, so we dont need that feature anyway.

And in MP you can use software to alter your voice so you sound like Duke.

guys, making up words for Duke to say like you mentioned is extreamly far fetched and wouldn't even get GBs attention for a second. this is just the most ridiculous thing I have read in here.

trucedAnimal:nice thought but that would only work on one machine. Unless it then generated all those taunts on all the other machines in mp, nobody else would hear them. And it would be mostly important for multiplayer - for single player it would be fairly pointless and good ol' classic Duke quotes spoken by JsJ would be much better.

I'd expect DNF to have an sufficient repertory of one liners already. I think the one liner thread is proof that we cant think of any good one liners anyway, so lets leave it to 3DRealms.

It would be nice if there are also one liners that are usefull for MP. In DN3D you could play some one liners (e.g. "You are an inspiration for birth control") but they arere not really usefull for gameplay.
Counterstrike was the first MP game I palyed that had this feature. I can remember "enemy spoted", "i'm in position" and "go! go! go!!".
They are not one liners like others but for MP they would be usefull.
But I guess 3DRealms can come up with some funny versions of those standard messages.
"Ugly alien spoted!", "I'm ready to kick ass!", "Move your lazy asses!" or something like that.

It would also be fun if there was one where Duke is whistling grabbag just like when he shits down the Overlords neck.

Good point. But the one liners could be sent as IPA and rendered once, when the systemload is not too high, then cached. On the other hand it could as well be sent by VoIP, as all speach by the player is.

It's not just tricky to implement a TtS system, but for 3DRealms to implement the system for DNF is a big ask. If the TtS companies devote all their time to making it work and still can't get it right, then what chance would a game developer have at it? As much as it is a novel idea it won't happen for DNF imo.

P.s. Just to clarify, I'm not trashing the idea or the people who want it, I'm just highlighting the reality of the situation. It'd be cool for it to happen, but I don't see it being in any game/s for sometime yet.

Still, inventing a hundred one-liners (plus reusing all the old ones) is easier than implementing this whatever type-'n'-talk system you're on about.

If it was like Duke Nukem 3D I wouldnt mind at all. Personaly I would like it if he had a specific one liner for each weapon he picks up for the first time in the game. That would be cool.

Example: Duke starts off with his pistol, and somewhere later on the first level he finds his shotgun. He picks up the shotgun & says: "Time for these alien maggots to taste my Boomstick!" Then after that every time u find a shotgun, it could be like DN3D or silent, how ever the dev's feel about it.

Some of the one liners from Duke 3D are actually from Evil Dead. Let's hope this time 3DRealms watch another movie - it will be good to have some new one liners
