Sounds good, but I'm thinking how will this affect the sales of the games that 3D Realms offer here. Maybe revenue of those older games isn't so important, or they are looking at GoG as a solid partner for digital distribution.

GOG is great, I was just there a couple days ago checking out some new stuff like 2 days ago, this must be new.

Count me in.... not like I need yet another copy
But it's the principle of the matter that forces me to buy it on GOG

You guys must realize this only means Apogee developed games are coming down the pipe. Apogee published games are still a no-no unless the original developers decide to release them [on GOG].

I should be pissed, as I just bought RoTT from the 3DR store a month ago, and it cost $15, whereas on GOG I expect it to be 5.99 or less. Bad luck, I have.

... and I don't understand all these fools tripping over themselves to buy another copy, when they already have a functioning one.

They're using some sort of DOSBox clone, I believe. I knew this stuff was eventually coming, but it showing up today was total news to me.

See above. At least with our old games, I know they don't have the source to recompile them into windows. They're the same old DOS games as far as I know. Unless they struck a deal with the DOSBox guys I don't know about for an "invisible" DOSBox or something... It's likely just a clone of DOSBox they're using. It's not like the Scott Host new executable for Raptor or something like that. It is the same old game again, just with some short of shell.

There was some work being done to unstick it. Presumably it got resolved, but since I wasn't told about this gog launch of our old games, I'm not surprised I wasn't told about that either.

Re: Apogee on GOG.com!
From wikipedia

Quote:
Legal status:

In 2004 Manhattan Project developer ARUSH Entertainment was bought out by HIP Interactive. Soon afterwards, HIP went bankrupt, and took Arush down with them. Because of bankruptcy proceedings, the legal rights to Manhattan Project are now held by a court appointed bankruptcy firm.

3D Realms has inquired about retrieving the rights, but has been unable to do so. This has been detailed a few times online by Joe Siegler of 3D Realms in their online forums[3][4], most recently in June 2006. Of the situation, Siegler said:

Arush got bought out by a larger company. The parent company went belly up, and took Arush down with 'em. DNMP is now the legal property of a court appointed holding company involved in the bankruptcy proceedings of the parent company whose name I can't remember.

Scott & I tried to contact them about either getting the rights back so we could sell it ourselves, or just releasing it as freeware. Unfortunately, said company "isn't interested in dealing with us", per Scott.

So DNMP is in rights hell, unfortunately. I would wager being the folks who "are" Duke Nukem, we could probably fight that and get the rights back, but it wouldn't be worth it, really. A lot of court costs just to release a game as freeware, or sell it when it didn't sell much in the first place.

Sometime after the bankruptcy, the official website for Duke Nukem: Manhattan Project was allowed to lapse, and as such was picked up by a domain squatter.[5] Fortunately, before all the materials were lost, Joe Siegler of 3D Realms was able to recover a copy of the contents of the official Duke Nukem: Manhattan Project website from a former ARUSH Games employee, and now hosts the former contents on the 3D Realms Website [1].

It sounds like the website material was recovered, not the
game.

@ Everyone else...

Is there anything stopping 3D Realms / Apogee from making a new
side scrolling Duke game? I don't that there is, but of course, I'm no lawyer.
If not themselves, then could someone license the rights to make a new
one?

All I know is some time last year I saw some documents that stated some work was done with our lawyer to try and recover the rights to the game. That honestly is the extent of what I know. Logically, since it's listed as going to be for sale, those rights have been recovered.

Which, IMO is a good thing, as the game deserves to be out there, it's a good one.

Hehe. Just bought a copy of Duke Nukem Manhattan Project on Amazon.com last week. Happy to have a boxed copy, I have a slim jewel case copy. I haven't recieved the game yet, as it takes too long to arrive here, 3 weeks being the least.
I ordered it along with Duke Nukem Atomic and Max Payne for the Gameboy Advance . Deadly happy.
