Re: 'High' Quality in full version (PC)..
The only thing I noticed and picked on was the hands as they are square and things that you killed or marked just dissappearing however everything else was amazing, I can see what you guys mean about the low res part but I was busy actually playing the game and getting into however as far as the concerns I raised go they didnt stop me from playing the game and finishing the demo twice!

Re: 'High' Quality in full version (PC)..
Would nice to see an Ultra High option on the PC, Doom 3 had it which from High to Ultra high was hardly noticeable and needed a graphics card that didnt even exist at that time.
You can now get 1gb memory graphics cards amazing! |

I just started playing through again to see this low quality textures and I just don't really see them. Everything looks good enough for me.

Playing it on highest quality possible, at 1280x1024 (6800GS, using latest nvidia drivers) >>
I played it the third time today, most low quality textures are only visible on walls. In alien ship though, it's hard to notice such things.. usually (which is a good thing). Going to play it again now, I just love sniping those aliens :P Low res textures are the first thing I notice in every game I play, mostly because they are ACTUALLY low res and are right in your face from the start: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Another one here >> (5 images limit) EDIT: Prob should mention that except for aliens, tommy and his grandpa, all character models (humans) have crappy textures. Don't know why, cause main character looks very detailed in comparison.

Looks fine to me. There has yet to be a game where textures don't look blurry when your up close. I do have to agree that blurriness had a little renaissance lately with the upcoming of all that multi texturing mumbo jumbo. But this looks far from bad. In fact, it looks excellent. It's not less blurry than most other games. It's just more obvious due to a) bump maps and b) lack of detail maps.

Bump mapping.. parallax mapping (here) makes it look better and is the only saviour. If you have played HL2 (perfect example), then you will see what majority of areas without local and specular maps does to the environment (it looks unrealistic even for a fictional environment). BTW, those shots were taken at medium distance, not at extreme closeups, at extreme close ups you can hardly see any detail in any game out there. Oh and first shots are taken right from the opening cinematic, so unless the developers want people to never walk near any wall, I think most of us will notice the quality.. A LOT! |

So you think HL2 looks bad too eh? Maybe you should stop playing games all together. The hardware to make them "look good" obviously doesn't exist yet.

It's just that I am a real pain in the ass when it comes to noticing things like texture or models quality in every game I play :P

Desmasic's pictures are perfect examples. Those textures jut right out and smack you in the face. They seriously look out of place for a game in 2006.

This aint the texture quality. Its obivously overscaled. they seem to do that quiet often, scale textures in the editor. I dont see what people are crying about. The game has awsome looking, high quality textures everywhere...maybe not so in the firtst 5 minutes (aka bar scene) tough they make a good atmosphere...but seriously, why would you make a deal out of it? they wont change them now... ![]()

omg I can't hear it anymore...
Seriously it's not all about uber highres textures in EVERY place of the game!!! (nearly) everyone in here is bitchin about low res textures, but how about you point out the pros of the games textures like the most organic surfaces EVER seen in any game to date!! I for one love the textures and after all it's the ensamble that counts and Prey offers a cohesive game experience where the look and feel fits perfectly the desired overwhelming experience of being drawn into a hostile alien environment. There are few games out there (especially in the shooter market) which made me go wow - But Prey made my mouth dry out. Kudos to Human Head and 3DRealms! ![]() |

Re: 'High' Quality in full version (PC)..
^ Well that won't be a very good thing. Unless you are using TNT2 Ultra, you should expect high quality from games you play. Have you even seen how big the textures actually are in the demo?
They obviously have scaled the textures, but scaling a 256x256 texture for a whole wall isn't very pretty. Try doing same with 1024x1024 in D3 engine, looks damn detailed even at close range. I am talking about Ultra quality in Quake4 and Doom3 btw, pure TGA goodness ![]() Can anyone from 3D Realms staff confirm that the low quality was just for the demo and we can expect higher quality textures in full version? I mean we are talking PC here, not Xbox. |

Re: 'High' Quality in full version (PC)..
Although I agree Desmasic about the textures. And I even noticed the human models. I must say that this game brought me a ton of joy. AND THAT'S ONLY A DEMO! It was insane how much I loved this while only playing a demo. I never even paid attention to Prey because I'm a huge Duke Nukem fan. So I always kept heading right for the DNF areas. I could have cared less if this thing looked like half life 1 it was so fun. My biggest visual complaint about the game is a hand-me-down from using the Doom3 engine. Everything is more shiny that it should be. I dislike all the shiny. It's a nice way to create a type of illusion that makes it look nicer than it really is, but I still would prefer less reflectivitey, and more dirt. The whole gravity switching thing is incredible. Multiplayer is a lot of fun, but I feel it suffers from the doom3 engine. I can't put my finger on it exactly, but I think it has something to do with the character movement speed... it just feels wrong. I won't say it's too slow, but... it lacks variation I suppose. I'm deeply impressed by the amount of effort that must have been put into making maps for this game. You guys have some very talented people working there. The gameplay in Prey sold me, which is why it'll have my money and make me a happy gamer. I'm on a 2 year old computer and it runs Prey great in almost max settings. This is kind of dissapointing, but I understand the reasons. No I'm not insane, I just like it when I see games that make me want to upgrade my computer. A bit of advice about interactivitey in games though... in the begining of Prey there are lots of things to mess with in the bar. This was great. BUT if you only do this in the begining area, it makes people wonder why you bothered? Granted this wasn't much of the game in the demo, but it seems you did it to impress people in the begining then let it die. Once you're on the ship, the only interactive things became monitors, and only specific ones. I hope to see more interactive objects later in the game, even ones that serve no purpose (like the water heater shown in one of the pictures above). Either do something and stick with it, or don't do it. It wouldn't have changed gameplay one bit if I couldn't have flushed the toilet, turned the sinks on, lifted the seats, ect. So if you took it out it wouldn't be a bad thing. Personally I love that stuff and want to see more in the future. But you shouldn't say, "we'll give you a little now, but no more later." Everything feels more stationary when you do that. But just like the other guys complaining about little things on here, I will still be getting this game because it's amazing. Fortunately 3DR isn't composed of idiots, so they already know we're all getting this game no matter how much we might complain about small things, because in the end they're just that: small.

He's saying, there doesn't exist hardware (enough good videocards etc) to make a demanding game like Prey, to run high textures... Now, They COULD make higher resolutions, but that would make the game run like crap on almost any system... Only top notch machines will be acle to enjoy full graphics... And not everyone is going to buy new hardware, in the following 1-2 years (or even longer) I think they optimized the game greatly, making it both look great, and play smoothly... Anyways, i'm glad you enjoy the actualy game though... I'd be surprised if you didn't... ![]()

Re: 'High' Quality in full version (PC)..
I thought the bumpmaps on this game were used enough to hide any low-res texture work, and some of the more 'blurry' textures are used in areas where it doesn't make much difference. The bathroom wall for example looks fine to me, because what difference would seeing more ripples make? Its still a smooth wall so I'd rather they didn't waste performance, and instead spend it on the tiles and other textures (which they did).
In general I do agree games need higher resolution textures, however NOT at the cost of polygons or bumpmapping because to me that looks equally as bad. Seeing a 1024x768 texture on a flat wall is just as bad as a super low quality 320 texture on a hevaily bump mapped surface. Some areas of HL2 had amazing textures, but the walls themselves were flat and lifeless.....that hurts the image to me. I do think there is a happy medium, but for now Prey looks excellent enough for me. Especially with that new "High resolution bump mapping" feature that makes cracks and details look much better. |

Ok, here's the thing. People running at low quality will run the game at low quality. People with hardware good enough to run the game at higher quality will 'choose' higher quality from options and will enjoy more detail. Nothing changes. People with slow machines still get the same quality you got from the demo, and people with high machines get better quality. So you are forgetting that people can 'optimize' (options ie.) the game according to their machines. Adding high res textures means that higher quality unlocks more details. Lower quality setting will still use low res DDS textures. So it doesn't change anything anywhere. Everyone is happy. Right now it looks like there ARE NO high res/quality textures AT ALL even Highest quality. It's prob just cause of demo, but they should confirm this if possible, cause Prey's medium Quality was supposed to be equal to Doom3's highest quality level, and what I saw was Doom3's lowest quality level in most textures. ![]() Oh and you are right about the gameplay. It's fun and innovative ![]() |

Dude, don't you think if it would possible with current hardware to stick multiple super-hires texutres to every single surface, they would do it? I mean, why shouldn't they? Because they're lazy? Or maybe solely to piss you off?

![]() And yes, they can do it, it's possible (in D3). If they can't, prob the limitation with some features they used in exchange for texture quality (to increase performance) or prob cause it is pure D3 code they worked on, when Doom3 wasn't even out. |

Re: 'High' Quality in full version (PC)..
The fact is that games that came out in 2003/2004 had much higher texture resolution than Prey does. FarCry, HL2, Chronicles of Riddick, Guild Wars all have much better looking textures than Prey does. It doesn't hurt gameplay, but it's kind of annoying that in 2006, a triple A game has blurry textures at a medium or even far distance. While Prey stills pretty good, it also comes out as a bit "moddy" instead of full blown professionality.
The problem is that to people like me and desmasic, is that these textures leap out at hit you in the face. We didn't go looking for bad textures (at least I didn't), we just noticed them during the course of our playing experience. |

Re: 'High' Quality in full version (PC)..
None of those games had better textures....are you blind?...go replay them and look for yourself, HL2 textures are grey and dule and remind me of HL1 not all of the textures atleast, not to bash half like 2, Far Cry looked good, but still had bad textures here and there, chronicles of riddick had the samn problem as Half Life 2..Guild Wars is a 3rd person game...try playing that in first person it will look worse then all them and the bloom lighting hides most of their blurryness. I hate games that try so hard to look realistic and fail, im more a cartoony stylized person when it comes to games, I like graphics like WoW and Banjo Kazooie and lots of colors...go figure, but it is indeed a game and the graphics are the best out atm imo, trust me on it. And yes Prey does have a few blurry areas...but what game doesn't?, if it looked to good no one could run it.
It also shows that these people who made this game weren't out for money but to make a very playable game, one that you can play over and over, I can tell you this from the demo. If they were out for money, they would make it look like Jesus, then release it without a lengthy demo and they would sell like hotcakes on their graphics alone.

desmasic,
You've made your point, really. If you don't like compressed textures then don't buy/play the game. No need to try and 'win' and convince everyone on the Internet. FYI, pretty much every FPS I know in the last couple of years ships with compressed textures. |
