The only potential problem I see with Gearbox as the new dev., is they have no past experience with designing highly interactive levels and so one could fear that the "learning curve" may be to steep to produce something of high enough quality from them...but that's just evil speculation, I know! :-)

Would have prefered Valve myself or perhaps Arcane Studios(despite it could have used a bit more final polish, their Dark Messiah was and interesting game to me). Id Software has grown big in staff too, but have only just recently shown interest in more interactive enviroments(RAGE) and IMO lacks experience too in this field.

That is not really a problem. If the rumor is true(and it IS a if), then GBX will obviously be building on the years and years of work that 3DR did on DNF.

I don't understand how we could possibly be waiting until the third day to find out what's going on.

Although I do recall a developer at GenCon who was showcasing one title at the booth, and two days later doing Press Conferences for a more anticipated title in a convention meeting room. Every other visitor to the booth was like "yes, but what about ______" . Could easily see that happening here.
