A reasonable idea
Ok how about duke nukem forever having 5 episodes like duke 3d, but to make it interesting they each have there own main plot with sub-plots, and also each tying-together making it one huge story.

Let me clear it up for cause i can tell most of you are confused, each episode has one main story-line, as you play you come across a level or building where you stray off the main story-line into a whole new one called a sub-level, they dont last all that long and as you finish you come back into the main story (its like unreal).

but unlike duke 3d the episodes will tie-together into a huge story, also you make choices in one episode that you might regret in another episode.

for example, duke finds himself fighting a army of aliens on a bridge and duke decides to destroy the bridge to kill the army, in a different episode you need to make a return and cross that bridge to get to a secret facility that just created a new weapon to destroy the aliens, thus forcing you to find another route and entering a sub-level to get to that facility.

are you getting what im saying. duke can make several desiciosn in that situation:

fight them head-on.
destroying the bridge.
running away and fighting them later on that episode.

if you chose to fight them and killed them all you didnt need to go to that sub-level cause you didnt destroy the bridge. you see know.

if you like the idea or not just give a logical explanation why you do or do not.

Duke3d originaly(full version) had 3 episodes. Doesn't really matter though.

About episodes. There won't be any:

Oh, about the idea. It's interesting. Though it's the same thing as with destroing walls. It destroys the structure of a level. Plus, your idea suggest that game somewhere must keep all those changes to the level you might come back. Don't know if it's really easy. The savegame just become bigger and bigger.

How about there are ROTT style levels and episodes. The Episode really doesn't matter, but it's still there... in one seamless thing.

I like it, but
A) Duke doesn't need to destroy the bridge because he kicks ass
B) It takes to much time to develop
C) I see DNF more as a straight forward shooter with a lot of interactivity, not as something you described.

Would be great for a different game though.

A very good idea IMO.

Isn't it something that SiN Episodes is doing (and HL2: Episode 1)? You have many episodes that tie into together - they're offered as stand-alone games though.

i mean in one complete package, the average fps game is 20 hours long (thats when you play it non-stop), i just want a long game and waiting this long is a serious disapointment, i dont know about most of you guys but i expect duke nukem forever to be way better than mediocre.
