I'd rather see it on DVD. CD as a media format's been dead for about three years. Yet it still survives. It's not a format, it's a zombie.

I think DVD everywhere since George said you could even ship DVDs any time during 2004. And those without DVD drive can still order the game through GameXstream and download it if they don't mind (at least the ones without DVD drive still have the possibility to play the game).

It could be done like most other releases today.

Regular retail edition - CD
Collector's edition - DVD

It would be cool if mroe developer's started using DVD instead of 5 or 6 CD's. But that probably won't happen for a long ass time.

Yeah and sometimes even that's not the worse... the worse thing that can happen (as for me...) is when you install a 3CD game and in the end you have to put the first CD back... have I mentioned that the third one is a "play disc" ?

I don't think there are computers without a DVD-ROM player that are above the minimum sys reqs (for this game) these days. So why bother bringing it out on CD?

Well one of the main reason for holding back DVDs and using multiple CDs instead has been money. I remember a similar discussion in one of these boards where somebody gaming related (i think it was some guy of Remedy talking about Max Payne 2 but i have a bad memory right now) mentioned that back then DVD was still a bit more expensive. And getting something shipped with an amount of thousands or maybe even millions of copies even a couple of cent of difference between a dvd and a cd version could matter. Afaik that's what the main reason has been to stick with CD for a while.
But I got no idea what the whole money situation is looking like today. Either way I guess these days games are taking too much space to deliver on CDs anyway, so it's probably gonna be a DVD version.

I very very much doubt that is true anymore, besides Max Payne 2 was only 2 cd's (asuming your memory is actualy good). I can't see how 4-7 cd's is going to be cheaper then one dvd these days. Also the fact that almost all games come on dvd here in Europe(at least Sweden and a few more places) points at the cost not being the issue.

My Max Payne 2 has 3CDs But there is a 2CD version as well I think.
Well, here in the Czech republic for example Half-Life 2 was originally distributed on 5(!)CDs... though now its a DVD as far as I know... but unfortunately, I was kinda eager to play the game the moment it arrived....

There are two cases to be made for keeping a CD version along with a DVD version:

- Some people with just CD drives have upgraded their computers constantly through the years, but haven't yet put DVD drives on their machines.

- Some people like watching their pr0n and movies while installing 4GB games.

There's 3 CDs, but it's packaged like a DVD, as you may have guessed. Why couldn't they get it overwith and ship it as a DVD version in that case, and have a Doom 3-style CD cover for the CD version?

Prey will be released on both CD and DVD in all regions according to what 2k are telling us. You'll be able to get either.

The reason we still have to ship on CDs is because the retailers demand it. Apparently a great number of their returns are due to people buying DVDs and not having a DVD player, or wanting the CDs. If it were up to me, I'd go all DVD , but we have to go with the retailers tell us.

No big deal with me... In Denmark, most major games are released as DVD's...
Doom 3 however, was 3 CD's... but i'm getting the collectors edition of Prey, and it's very unlikely to find THAT as CD in Denmark...

Sometimes, you specifically ask for the CD version at EB and the idiot behind the counter gives you the DVD version in the CD case. It's happened twice to me.

I didn't even know they sold dvd editions at EB... Not if they could help it at least. I can't find dvd editions of anything anywhere.

Unless they're special editions like FEAR or QUAKE 4.

They usualy have both here, but you have to check yourself. Like stated above, sometimes I've asked for the DVD edition and the R-tard behind the counter just grabs one and hands it to you without looking.

Gave me the CD copy, and a kid next me the DVD edition. Right in front of the clerk we handed eachother the right copies and were like "Okay, now it's right."

But remember Serious Sam 2, no DVD editions released here in teh US or Canada because EB and Gamestop refused to carry DVD only games.
So instead of doing DVD only distribution for SS2, they did CD only.

So it's not always up to the distributor, they have to check with retailers and find out what stores will carry what.

And all this because people are too damn stupid to read the system requirements on the box if I remember correctly (read about that in another thread here).

I believe thats a lie because there are some games (GTA:SA, Boiling Point, Oblivion) that are released on DVD only and on sale in ebgames (at least my local ebgames anyway). I fail to believe that was why SS2 was cd-only.

In fact the game isnt THAT big, but they used some kind of reverse comprimation process so that gamers can have fun with swaping DVDs, which, of course, wont be labeled to create some tension and surprise
