Re: Duke Nukem 3D: High resolution pack released
I have been playing with the HRP for awhile, and I must say it looks great. EXCEPT that all the girlie posters, videos and mags are really bad. I don't like the idea of taking copyrighted material and placing it in this sort of project. And although it's damn easy to rip off photo material, it just sticks out too much from otherwise "cartoony" look.

Good bad example is tile 577 which is simply photo (of not-that-good looking woman) with no editing at all.

Also tile 568 (the "play" magazine) is very badly done (with paint?) and author has written "copyright (c) 2004 3DRealms" to it, which is NOT good thing to add to this type of project, even as a joke. Especially if the author has first stolen someones work for that girl in the mag, and then claims 3DRealms did it.

And I was wondering if it's really necessary to replace the original video screen girlie textures with illegal "high res" girlie material? Video screens tend to be rather low res anyway, and since everyone else is going to hard way when making the textures, why accept this quickly done illegal poop?

Just want to add a few word in defence of the 577 tile (play magazine). I like it, although I do not know who did it.
IMO perfect job, made NOT with paint, obviously (if you have same copy as me). I suppose it was made with poser and not "stolen" from some mag (not quite sure, may be wrong). As for the text - as long as 3DRealms dont mind - why should we?

Maked a mistake in my previous post : instead of 568 I wrote 577.
577 really is just a photo of some girl.

So where can I download this 75MB file with all the highres sprites and textures??? All the links are broken, I assume due to bandwidth limits.

Darn, no one works?

Its not long until the next version (YYea I know I have been saying it for some time now) so probably wont go through to much trouble finding mirrors for the old ones.

We need to try an come up with a solution for the next one though. Only a fileplanet download would not be to good.

Maybe using bittorrent or something similar is an option to consider.

If the new one is an update, not a full pack, it should eat as much bandwidth. Hopefully.

The new HRP is a full-pack with a completely new structure where defs are written in the latest DEF-language.

I wonder... JonoF told clearly that the current DEF-language is likely to change in the final jfDuke version which is not far from release... So once this HRP is released Parkar and Killd need to rebuild and re-release HRP again?

All this troubles with uploading and downloading each time new pack could be avoided by using patchmaker.
Those who have already old pack will have to download only patch, this saving bandwidth of filehosters. Patchmaker will compare the packs and extract only the difference between old and new pack and make file executable (patch itself).

Re: Duke Nukem 3D: High resolution pack released
Unfortunatly in this version its not quiet that easy, my estimation is that about 5-30% of the textures in the old one is exactly the same in the new one. They have been re palettiezed(using bright), recompressed(using pngcrush) and some have been turned into jpg.

We will see about using patches later on when not almost every single file has changed.

One good side effect about this is that the new one will only be about 2megs bigger in size and still have better quality(less artifacts on 8bit png textures) and more content.

I propose to use emule . This way its enough to release just one or two copies into the network and after short time all pack will be dispersed widely. I myself downloaded several first packs this way (long time ago)
And it much more user friendly and widely known than bittorrent.
After releasing it just post edonkey (common format) link here.

actually you are wrong, bittorrent is more user friendly and more widely known, i'v seen a graph that measured the internet activity and that month when they measured a huge percentage like 20+% was bittorrent activity.

just begin with hosting the file on you computers and then just release the torrent file which is only couple of kb large which then everyone can download and then the bittorrent client will connect to the people who have the files and the file will spread incredibly fast cos you will be uploading and downloading the same file at the same time.

emule more user friendly? It must have got far better then last time I tried it. It was a pain to download anything using it. Most of the time my speed was below 5kb/s on a 10mbit fiber connection. It sure is a bit better then its predecessor edinkey were you needed to find a good server etc.

Bittorrent is the smothest peer to peer downloading method I have ever tried. It just works and speeds are almost always pretty good(from 5 - 500kb/s for me on 10/1 mbit adsl). Its as easy to use as emule just download a file and double clik it, with firefox its eaven easier, just download and when its done press launch. Just as with emule you only need to have one seed to start with and it will spread. If we make a torrent for it I'll probably be seeding it as long as my comp is on(~24/h a day).

It was when it was first made about (wild guess) 3-4 yers ago. Used it for a few months before givning up on it. It was way easier to use then edonky were you neede to connect to master servers but it did not work al that good. Any way since renegado put up the first pack I guess it'll be on emule rather quickly.

I get on the edonkey network from time to time and it's that slow. Sometimes I can get 10-15KB download, but that's with 4 or 5 peers connected. It's ususally under 5KB if anything at all.

One time I even downloaded the exact same 400MB file from both edonkey and bittorrent at the same time. Bittorrent finished the download with ~100 known peers in < 4 hours. In the same time I only downloaded 0.3% of the file with over 500 known edonkey peers. I think that says it all.

Bittorent would probably be the best way to go.

Emule is good for people that use it all the time, that way you get a high priority on everyone elses list. If a new user downloads emule just to get the HRP, they'll probably only get around 5-10 kbps. I also find that new users waste a lot of uploading space with very little downloading.

If bittorent was used, anyone could jump on and get speeds of 15kbps+ with no trouble. Albeit, that depends on how many people are seeding/leeching at the time, but judging on the HRP poularity it should be okay. Uploading is also a lot less, probably only a quarter of the total file size. BT, as has already been said, is a lot more user friendly; open it, tell it where to download, and your set!

You only upload if there are downloaders (of course :P) so it's a good idea to just leave it always seeding just incase

It's only been downloaded 3 times.. but I'll add it to the source portal page in a sec so people can download it if they haven't already.
