I don't personally care for Steam, but this is still a good move for 3DR & HH.

I'm not sure how anything could be more customer-friendly than Steam. It just sits in your system tray and quietly does its thing without bothering the user. Not to mention, buying a game over Steam is simplicity itself. It really doesn't get more customer-friendly than that.

Steam doesn't blitz the player with ads, either. Simply disable product announcements in the preferences and Steam essentially becomes a stealth program.

It seems to me that Scott has just been looking for excuses to hate Steam--even if those excuses are bogus (see above)--for no other reason than it's owned and run by one of 3DR's competitors. There's also the fact that he's implied at other times that he'd love Steam if it was independent from Valve, so we really need to take his whining with a grain of salt.

In the end, though, I think he recognizes that Steam is digital distribution done right, even if it is owned by Valve.

My take is that there simply is no valid alternative at the moment, although I wonder what happened to the company to rise out of Triton's ashes that he mentions in the GS interview.

In the end, it's just the money talking, both in the earlier decision to go with a small unproven "dead man walking" company and the recent turnabout towards the 'despicable' Steam platform.

That company's probably still a good 6 to 12 months away, I would imagine. 3DR/2K Games needed a solution now.

Re: Prey coming to Steam
It's 9:00 AM EST, does anyone know when they're going to allow the validation of the keys? I bought this game on Triton about a day or two before the system went under and the download was corrupt, so I've been waiting about two months to play a game I bought in early October, and I can't take it much longer!

Oh did we? I've been told nothing other than "there is no risk".

I was actually quite apprehensive about buying through Triton, because I just don't like being dependent on some company to be able to use the stuff I've already bought from them. Therefore I asked a question in the Triton thread on this very forum about what would happen if Triton went belly up. As a response I was told that that would never be a problem, and a patch removing the Triton dependency would be released on the off chance that it would. (Granted, no one from 3DR or Triton said that, but they sure as hell didn't deny it either. The patch has also been promised by Royal since then.) And, as the stupid man I am, I believed it and threw away my money.

Now, here we are, not really all that much later, and what has happened? I have a multi GB binary blob on my hard drive titled Prey that I can't use, there is no patch removing Triton from it, I have been promised a hard copy which, well over a month later, only a handful of people seem to have recieved, and now I'm starting to think I have no choice but to put my copy of Prey in the hands of Valve and their ever changing, retroactive License agreement if I ever want to play it again. You can understand my happiness with that prospect as "there is no risk" with Steam either.

I just find it amusing at all the armchair businessmen/developers in this thread condeming Scott for his decision. I know I'm one to talk, but let see how you would handle a situation where your million dollar investment ends up hitting a brick wall.

Scott doesn't like how it went to Steam, but he has to swallow his pride for what's best for his investment and business.
In no way does it affect people who bought the physical copy. Get over it.

EDIT: Fixed grammar

Welcome to my world.

Anyway, this is honestly not a big deal. Triton went bankrupt, we needed a solution, Steam was it now. This doesn't in any way affect anyone who bought a boxed copy - anyone who implies that it does is just trying to create FUD - that's unnecessary.

P.S. I will NOT allow this to become another Steam Sucks thread. If you try and take it there be warned, your posts will be removed - that is NOT what this thread is about.

I think that the move of Prey to Steam is basically orgasmic. I have been a fan of steam since the day I bough Half Life, and I was skeptical at first of Steam selling games not produced by valvE or by their close affiliates, but I see that they are selling some nice game (ie Prey), too. I think that this is, over all, a great move for both Steam and for HH and 3dr. But thats just my opinion, now for some dopefish!

How do we know Scott has changed his mind on Steam? At the moment there is no other option for digital distribution. How can he be accused of hypocrisy when he never said that it would be preferable not to digitally distribute if Steam was the only option?

And for those that want to believe that he hated Steam all along, consider:

"Steam may be the most important event for independent developers in the last five years. Independent developers should look hard into the option of using Steam. Valve has poured $10 to $15 million into R&D and making Steam work, and I'm impressed with how well it worked with the release of HL2, despite a few glitches."

Re: Prey coming to Steam
I don't see the problem here...if anything this just shows Scott's dedication to customers to make sure they aren't screwed despite his own personal feelings about Steam. And as Firefly pointed out, he's personally very much in favor of digital distribution, including Steam, but is reluctant to have Steam as his first choice. I think the reason he talks so much about what he doesn't like about Steam is because he wants those issues to be addressed, because then it would be an excellent first choice for them.

I personally think this might get some better exposure to the game, what with Steam being a popular service. I don't think many would've heard of games like Darwinia, DEFCON or Red Orchestra without Steam.

I have been a strong supporter of Steam, even if I'm not quite ready to plunge into the digital distribution thing yet. There's just something about a box/case that makes you feel like you own a hard copy of the thing.

OK, I've finally heard back from them. All of my points are correct. There isn't going to be a "formal press release" about it from 2K or Valve. I was told the countdown clock is it. I'll have a story about this on the main 3DR site shortly.

I hope Prey 2 won't require a Steam activation for single player, though...
