Vista...yeah I'm going there. Will DN3D run great?
Getting a new gaming rig, here's why:
The one I have has slowed down so much, that only Duke 3D runs good anymore. Even if I reformatted, my rig is being held back by the Pentium D CPU and its crappy netburst arrangment, so it never ran CPU demanding games like Dark Messiah or Bioshock very well anyway. Going to Best Buy...they (finally) offer plug and play gaming rigs with high end GPU's already in them (its about time!). Of course, my only choice is Vista 64. Will DN3D run ok? Can I use my Eduke 32 that I have (last years snapshot), or do I need the latest snapshot? What about HRP? How will it do with Vista? Is the DN3D sound distortion issue in Vista corrected? Thanks in advance |

Get the latest snapshot and it'll run fine.

Thanks Swiss. I assume I can keep my old HRP and it will do fine as long as I have the new Eduke then? (I like my old HRP, the blue light on the skyscraper and the liz troops that dont bleed as I shoot them.)

Ive been running Vista 64 for 2 years and have had no problems gaming. You will like vista 64.
When I installed D3d I asked in here for help and got it running straight away so there wont be a problem. |

Great thanks Ironside.
Off subject: Would you happen to know if Condemend Criminal Origins works on Vista 64? I got a bad feeling about that one. |

From the sounds of things you know what you are doing, but just make sure you get at least 2Gig of RAM for your new rig with Vista. If you are getting Vista64 you can get more than 4Gb

Yes, and then a burning fist of blood will reach out of the ruins of your rig and rip your beating heart out of your body, and the pc speaker will laugh maniacly as you watch your heart shudder to a stop before your soon-to-be-lifeless eyes.
They don't tell you THAT on Tom's Hardware!

Re: Vista...yeah I'm going there. Will DN3D run great?
The only thing your Vista64 machine won't run is 16-bit stuff so if for any reason you want to play some old 16-bit DOS game just use DOSBox. Otherwise I've had no problems with Vista64 at all.

XP is oldschool, vista 64 ftw!
There are many advantages when using vista and I have learned heaps about computers by using vista, its more user friendly. |

Re: Vista...yeah I'm going there. Will DN3D run great?
My main problem with Vista wasn't the driver incompatibility problems, the overall increased CPU usage when performing the same tasks as XP, the file I/O performance issues or the roughly 10-15% 3d performance decrease due to the new driver model, it was the poorly thought out UI changes that resulted in things like stupid dialog boxes with a single tab. Let's be realistic... Vista sucked when it was released. Driver support was either nonexistent or unstable for a lot of hardware, a lot of the OS had been rewritten and hadn't matured to the point of XP's rather outdated codebase, et cetera.
Now that both driver support and the internal workings of the OS have matured a bit, Windows 7 addresses the majority of the UI abominations and inconsistencies. It's not too bad of a platform now. I would, however, skip Vista entirely and go straight to 7 when it comes out because it's really a much better product. Half of its changes almost seem catered to "power users" and I like that a lot. |

Re: Vista...yeah I'm going there. Will DN3D run great?
Thanks TerminX, and thanks everyone!
Yeah, now I am thinking I might just as well wait a bit, Windows 7 is being released in August, not too long of a wait. I'm sure all things Duke runs just fine on the Win 7 OS, thanks to TerminX who I am sure has 7. But I am so tempted to get this new rig now...it has the i-7 CPU in it, which is uber powerful, despite Vista's hungry appitite. And this new rig also sports the ATi 1450 card which is a top notch GPU, and for another 200 bucks I can get another 1450 card, for a crossfire set-up. If I want to buy and install Win 7 later but get the rig now, I guess I could do that. I dont know what to do. It is too late to go with Vista, but too early to go with 7...it's the twilight zone for us nerds. Quote:
New Intel at 2.5 GHZ _______________________________ Pentium D at 3.0 GHZ /\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\ Which one will win? As you can see from my illustration, the Pentium's 3 GHZ has to travel a path that slows it down. Plus, the D (and I am guessing the 4 HT) is loud when any strain is put on it...this is because it has a variable speed fan that winds up when running near the CPU's limit (which is nearly always). Running Bioshock, it sounds like it might explode any second. Both the "D" and the "4 HT" can be overclocked, but I dont reccomend it because they already generate a ton of heat because of netburst. Don't get me wrong, the D and the 4 HT are not bad little CPU's, as they can run almost anything and are pretty much bulletproof. But they will drop framerates during outdoor scenes and heavy battles, and the fan loudness gets scary at times.

Re: Vista...yeah I'm going there. Will DN3D run great?
Okay, questions regarding Vista in a similiar vein as Blue Lightning's, but coming from somebody that's about ten times less knowledgable when it comes to computers. Basically I went and picked up the HP touchsmart (IQ500) yesterday. The computer I had before then was just fine (only a year and a half old, as a matter of fact), but I got this one through Conn's more to establish credit than anything else. I knew that its OS was Vista, but wasn't certain that that really implied anything, so I got it anyway. Well, I installed Duke Nukem today, and got a snapshot of eDuke (which I'm assuming is the most recent), and things are kinda wonky...Scratch that, things are REALLY wonky. The first time I loaded it, everything booted up just fine, but if I picked up a weapon, the game locked up, and some weird multi-colored lines popped up on the screen. I closed the game out, and the second time I tried booting it up it crashed. I remember seeing some kind of notice regarding GL pop up the first time I loaded it, but dismissed it, and now I can't really remember what it involved. Now I'm worried, not only about still getting to play Duke, but also all of the other stuff I play through DosBox. So, two questions:
A) is there any fix to this? Does it sound like the problems I'm having with Duke involve the OS, or the graphics card? and if it's the OS then B) I have a perfectly good XP sitting in my old computer. How tough would it be to put that in this touchsmart? (I asked my brother, who's more knowledgable about this stuff then me, and he said that from what he'd heard, it was damn near impossible to switch an OS out with something that was originally Vista) Thanks in advance to anyone willing to help me... |

Re: Vista...yeah I'm going there. Will DN3D run great?
Hi
I have problems running Duke 3d under Vista 32. When I try to install I get the following message: "Duke3d.exe stopped working" Windows is trying to find a solution and then nothing happens.. That's all I have tried both the original dos version and tried also with Eduke. Eduke crashes totally and not even the log can be copied ( have to use ctrl alt del) to stop edule installation ( not responding) It's a 2.4Ghz quadcore with 3 Mb RAM. (Brand Medion) Thanx for any help.. If possible to download /buy a new version that works under Vista I will do that too... My kids LOVE Duke Nukem..and I can't live without it.. Anders Denmark |

Re: Vista...yeah I'm going there. Will DN3D run great?
Well I am wondering if my comp would run Win7.
I use an Abit AB9. Abit doesn't manufacture boards anymore. And the AB9 is OLD. Of course it is no problem to get new drivers directly from the chip manufacturers (intel ICH8, realtek network et cetera), but one device remains proprietary. The god damn Abit µGuru. Unstable crap just like Win9x was. There IS an older driver for Vista but I doubt that the same µGuru driver for Vista works in Windows 7. And then there is the µGuru application, that communicates with the driver.... Hells bells, I want a new rig too |

Re: Vista...yeah I'm going there. Will DN3D run great?
I have Win7 on my old nForce2 + mobile Athlon XP rig. Runs fine. I have to use old XP drivers for a lot of the chipset stuff since the board is so old and there was never any official Vista support, but even the old open source driver I use for my TV tuner card works fine -- which hasn't been updated since 2003 or 2004.

Re: Vista...yeah I'm going there. Will DN3D run great?
TerminX, do you have a tv tuner based on bt8x8 ? I can send you a driver for 64bit too. It works on WinXP x64 and Vista x64 (a friend tested it on Vista).

Re: Vista...yeah I'm going there. Will DN3D run great?
Unfortunately, it's a 32-bit machine. But yes, it's a bt8x8 card. I think I've seen the ported version of the btwincap driver (that's the driver I'm using) that you're talking about floating around before.
