Location lock?
Hey Guys. Do you know if Duke Nukem 3D will have "location lock" when it comes out? Doom has it... it would be such a disapoinment if Duke Nukem also has.

for example, I'm from Chile (Southamerica) and I can't buy certain things in XBox Live. Like Doom. This because it says "The content is not availble for my location."

Make an American account. You can download Xbox live arcade games which aren't available in your country that way.

The problem comes with the IP.

I hope Duke will be availble for me too.

See, that's the main reason I don't like digital distribution and online authentication, they are way too good tools to force censorship "for the sake of the children" down my very adult throat.
BTW watch "Inside Deep Throat", a very interesting documentation.

For the sake of the children, eh? Tell me why the sponge bob game is locked for New Zealand. That's right. Doom isn't locked here... sponge bob is

Re: Location lock?
very very sad topic... i have the same problem here in germany. heard that microsoft checks your ip and that way sees from which country u are from..making it either possible or impossible to downloaded rated mature stuff...depending whether your country permits that game or not. but there is a way around it . contact me regarding this matter. i found a simple tutorial link which is pretty good...it describes how to do this. but its in german..so you would need someone to translate it into english or whatever language you need.

Well, I spent time playing Duke 3D in Japanese, so I'm pretty sure it will be released there. But all that stuff is up to Microsoft. Probably need to wait for the official announcement from Major Nelson on country stuff.

Re: Location lock?
dont wanna make anyone big hopes, but according to an xbox webpage here in germany, the game will infact be available in germany. and believe me germany is a country with alot of stupid laws and regulations when it comes to such things as computer games...very picky. so if it will be available here, it will definitely be available in most other countries. but please remember this is just what i just read...
the next point would be if the game - if infact it will be available in those countries that are strict about violent games - will be censored or not...this would mean no blood and no naked chicks on posters.

Re: Location lock?
They might lock it in Australia due to the strippers, in Duke Nukem 3D they released a version where there were no strippers, you couldn't blow up alien bodies on the floor etc etc.

Re: Location lock?
The Australian version was originally banned and a censored version was then made available (the proper version was unlockable via a patch), but then the full game was re released in Australia with the censorship removed.

Irritated Re: Location lock?
Jobi, I read it at xboxuser.de If you know German, here is the quote:

"Kaum zu glauben, aber zum Glück wahr: Kommen mittlerweile, angeblich gewaltverherrlichende, Xbox Live Arcadegames immer öfter unter den USK Hammer und müssen vor der virtuellen Tür zum Marktplatz Halt machen, so konnte Duke Nukem 3D sich erfolgreich gegen eine derartige Isolation wehren."

Its kinda strange though. The title of that short article is "Release in Germany". I tried googling, but culd not find one more source that confirms this or which writes about the actual release in Germany. So i am still very sceptical about all this. Even though xboxuser.de seems to be a big xbox website, they are the only ones making this claim.

There's only one other country that I'm aware of, it's Korea or Indonesia or something like that. I honestly cannot recall at the moment.

Keep in mind, "Microsoft blocking Duke" is somewhat unfair. Yeah, they TECHNICALLY did it, but they don't just throw darts at a map, and say "Banned here!". It's up to local governments and various individual countries' versions of ESRB to decide those things - not MS.

I've got legit editions of both Duke Nukem 3D and Duke Nukem 3D Atomic Edition, the latter has no censorship.

I could not find v1.3D uncensored here (NZ). Atomic edition wasn't censored here, however.

I couldn't find V1.3D uncensored here in Australia either but i think it never was released uncensored anyway, but I was in grade 1 at the time with it being one of my first PC games when i got it in 1997/8. Later my uncle bought me the Atomic Edition for my birthday

Re: Location lock?
yeh your correct i have both legit versions too. 1.3d was always censored but as i mentioned you could uncensor it via a patch, which was eventually made available on 3d realms own site Considering Atomic was released uncensored though i would be very surprised if Duke for XBLA ran into any trouble. It better bloody not!!

That's because OZ had removed the restriction by that point (if I remember my timing right).

It wasn't that big a deal, playing in languages I didn't know was more comedic than anything else. The Japanese lettering will still be in the package, it just won't be sold there. If you set your console's language to Japanese, you'll see it.

I need to check and see if I can divulge what languages we have in there. I'll get back to you on that.

OK, the languages the game supports via localized translations are..

Spanish
French
German
Italian
Portugese
Chinese
Japanese

I know there's more than one Chinese language supported on the 360, I forget which one we do support at the moment. Set the language on your console to one of those, and you can see it for yourself. This is not based off of where it is sold, just what language you set your console to.

Attached is the main menu in Portugese.

Kind of ironic to have support for german when it isn't available here. And yes, I chose to ignore Austria. The world is a funnier place without them.

If someone recorded the files. Joe mentioned playing it in Japanese, I don't know if that includes audio. But I doubt it.
