Re: The Thief 4 Thread
If Thief 4 turns out to be nothing more than a retelling of Thief 1 and 2, I will still be happy.

Re: The Thief 4 Thread
During my days of darkness (offline) I started to replay Thief 1 but stopped at the Haunted Cathedral mission. Somehow my dislike for the undead stops me from playing that mission. I hate it if I can't blackjack anyone. So I just played through Thief 2 again and I must say it's without doubt the best part in the series. The levels are just awesome and incredibly huge. My favourite is still the demo for the game though. Although the Angelwatch tower part is shorter than in the full version, the city exploration is much more fun. And the archer fight is comedy gold.
*sigh* I have to get over my dislike for zombies, I guess. Finish off the Trickster. Can't wait for Undercover, my favourite Thief 1 mission. The third one will have to wait until I have a new rig to play on, I want it in its full glory. And a decent texture pack for improvement.

Try the alternate entrance to Angelwatch. Look closely, because it's not easy to spot, but it makes you play the mission quite differently. As for Thief III, I'm sure you're already aware, but get John P's texture pack. Also get the Minimalist Mod (appropriately titled Thief III: The Minimalist Age on the splash load screen), it makes quite a few differences and makes the game feel more like the originals. You can even have the little shields back as your health bar instead of the red gems. It'll completely change the look of the HUD and you can eat food to gain health, instead of not even being able to keep food in your inventory.

That's where I gave up too. The game stopped being Thief at that point.

Sadly, you're missing one of the best missions of the series. Have you actually gone through it before, but now dread going through it each time you get to that point in the game, or did you just quit during your first playthrough? Your 'it stopped being Thief at that point' excuse can be avoided if you set the difficulty of the mission to Normal or Hard, as those difficulties won't ask you to destroy all the Hammer Haunts at the end, if that is indeed what your problem is.

Re: The Thief 4 Thread
that mission was what i thought pretty hard, but then i realized you could kill the haunts with the sword and not have to use holy water.
I had run out of holy water on accident, because i somehow mistook the end of that mission to mean i had to kill all of the undead and immediately wasted my fire arrows and holy water on the zombies.

Re: The Thief 4 Thread
It's not an excuse, it's a fact. Thief is about sneaking around unseen and fooling the AI doing so. A level that is virtually devoid of that indeed stops being Thief. And I was already playing on Easy.
The game stopped offering what it was designed to do so I stopped playing. End of story.

Re: The Thief 4 Thread
See, you still haven't mentioned your reason for quitting.
Was it because of the Hammer Haunts objective, or was it because you had trouble sneaking past the undead? If you remember, Brother Murus actually ties the Hammer Haunts objective in with the story; as a way of consecrating the cathedral. Just pretend the sword is your blackjack, as it only takes one backstab to kill off a Haunt. A little suspension of disbelief can go a long away. Shouldn't you of dismissed the game long before that mission, if this is your view of the word Thief? Once you're spotted, and the AI has you fooled, you're no longer a thief, but an incapable, incompetent criminal...so then what? Start > Programs > this will Uninstall Thief from your computer, do you want to continue? I could be wrong here and you happened to be a master of Lytha as soon as you started the game.

Thief 3 was a one level wonder, I don't really think I could take much more of it unless it was designed by the original developers.

And yes, I have John P's texture pack already on my HD. I'm expecting major visual improvement. Less of that plastic console look. Sinon, there is a way to skip missions in Thief and I suggest you do that if the Haunted Cathedral stops you from continuing. Later on you will find awesome missions, Undercover being my favourite and the last mission being very worth playing as well. Did you stop at "The Haunted Cathedral" where you have to find the Cathedral in the first place or at "Return to the Cathedral" where you get the Eye? I always hated both missions. Always. Although the undead are extremely well done, I hate the fact I can't simply blackjack or backstab (well, not the Zombies at least) them. I love doing that. I'm not Lytha, I knock out everyone. I love to get close and personal. The only walking beings in Cragscleft were the undead when I left that place. However, are the any news on that mysterious game that could be Thief 4?

Re: The Thief 4 Thread
Plastic console look is somewhat false ... it's more of a general plastic look. graphic artists 'could' do it without making everything looking like plastic on a console, too. It's just that somehow most developers simply don't do.

Re: The Thief 4 Thread
You can see an open window high up on the right side of the tower. It's easiest to see from the last rooftop before setting foot on Angelwatch. How you get up there, I'll leave to you.
*HINT* There's a reason why Victoria supplies you with Vine Arrows instead of the standard Rope Arrows.

Re: The Thief 4 Thread
I'll start you off with these, Wamp, but don't get my hopes like that again by bumping this thread!!
T1 must plays are: Autumn in Lampfire Hills (particularly memorable) Lorgan's Web The Mystery Man (probably the best Mansion-type mission I've played) Calendra's Cistern The Death of Garrett T2 must plays: Calendra's Legacy The Seventh Crystal (amazing) Pirates Ahoy! Equilibrium (quite difficult...you're pickpocketing cloaked Keepers that are quick and deadly) The Inverted Manse Keep in mind that most if not all these missions were created by die-hard Thief fans. They're much harder and complex than the missions from the games. Bottom line... search, read, and if necessary, keep all scrolls, books, postings you come across. Keys, switches, locks...they can be hidden anywhere and everywhere, but usually make sense from the readings you find in the mission. I find that the most memorable FMs belong to T1/TG.

Re: The Thief 4 Thread
ok, thanks for the tip Thief \o
Sorry for bumping the Thief 4 thread, but it was the newest one of all the 5 threads, so i just decided to do this one. Also, for reference, I went to Thief-thecircle.net and spent about a week downloading every single map there. Well, not all because the links were broken for some. Forgot how many i got, but it was about 7gb of maps, totalling 500 or 700. i forget. Anyways, I am playing a few right now and it looks like i am going through alphabetically. I played 2 that i liked, but i couldnt pass them for some reason. One involved looting 15K gold but i couldnt find a way to get into the safe of the jeweler shop. It mentioned a safe, but if it's the one i think it meant, it would not allow interaction. I think it was called Abank. The other one had 2 doors on the top floor, but they also would not let me pass. Amnesia was this map.

Re: The Thief 4 Thread
That coulda been a waste of time, Wamp. At The Circle, you should categorize your search to bring up missions based on Hammer Score...all the best ones show up first, but they stopped reviewing them years ago.
I only have 23 FMs with about 5 left to be played. Concerning the best FMs, I'll give you the only link you'll ever need, but you may have to find another site (The Circle, keepofmetalandgold.com, thiefmissions.com) to actually download them. http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=106781 I say start with Autumn In Lampfire Hills...some of the best thieving I've ever played.

Re: The Thief 4 Thread
I saw a thief 4 thread closed linked to here, so figured i would post.
Not exactly thief 4 related other than noticing the link ont he homepage saying they will announce the second game, but I am STILL playing thief fan missions. I posted just above, but i have a majority of the missions and am currently on the L maps. I am currently playing Thief 2 maps and will go back and play the Thief 1 maps, so i dont have to keep switching out the cds. There are not too many thief 1 maps anyways.

Assuming T4 is the game announced and that it'll still be XP compatible come release time, I see no need to ever upgrade my computer again. T4 completes me (hopefully).

Re: The Thief 4 Thread
As expected, Thief 4, or rather Thi4f is now officially announced:
Eidos-Montréal is excited to unveil its previously secret second title in development at the studio, Thief™ 4, the next instalment in the legendary series. The original Thief game, Thief: The Dark Project redefined first person gaming and established an entirely new genre of stealth based game play. The critically and commercially acclaimed Thief series has won numerous awards and accolades including GameSpy Hall of Fame, GameSpot Greatest Games of All Time and The Academy of Interactive Arts And Sciences Outstanding Achievement in Character and Story Development. Eidos-Montréal, which is also currently producing the much anticipated Deus Ex™ 3, has recruited the very best core team for the development of Thief 4. The team is comprised of industry veterans who have worked on an incredible collection of AAA titles and who each bring personal expertise in their respective fields. “We’re in the early development stages for Thief 4, but this is an incredibly ambitious and exciting project for Eidos,” said Stéphane D’Astous, General Manager at Eidos-Montréal. “While it’s too early for us to offer any specific game details, right now we are focused on recruiting the very best talent to join the core team at the studio and help us make what we believe will be one of the most exciting games on the market.” Development is under way and the team is looking to recruit the very best talent as production ramps up. Don't really like the title of Thi4f.... looks odd and brings back bad memories of other games that tried similar titles.... Driv3r. Why not just call it Thief 4, or Thief: something something.
Either way, very interested to see what comes of this.

It is extremely retarded. Doesn't mean anything about the game but it is unjustifiably dumb.
It'll be good to see how Thifourf is looking soon though.
