So you believe that developers ruin games because they try to keep reinventing their projects and don't have good management/production sense?

I give them more credit than that. Perhaps they've even admitted to a bunch of bad moves, but what made Duke great, and what makes so many games great, is the innovation.

When I think of an overrated game that couldn't think outside the box, I think of Crysis. I've played a lot of shooters in my life, and they used what works.... meh. The NPCs, and the gameworld mechanics are mediocre at best. One thing DNF won't be is a mediocre game that proclaims to be cutting edge.

Well my list would be:

1. The Duke Nukem character (voice, one liners etc.)
2. Interesting level design
3. All weapons from D3D
4. Hot babes
(5. interactivity)

I' ve seen the meqon demo too and it seemed to me that it would allow a lot of fun to be had in any game. I wouldn't mind seeing it in DNF.

This is a good example of what happened to 3dr and dnf, well said.

While Perpetual was making Star Trek Online, this is exactly what happened.

Now that Cryptic has it... they made deadline and churned out a game. I really enjoy the game, and it uses their "what works" MMO mechanics. But a lot of people wanted something else - including the pipe dream that Perpetual was trying to create. It now faces criticism for what it "should have been".

It's an extreme example, but to some extent I agree that some developers do not have the business sense to get a product out the door, but on the other hand, consumers do not have any better grasp than the developers on what is possible, or what to expect.

Innovation is important, but the reality is that the developer needs innovate within their budget/time constraints.

the reality is that you can't have a company that doesn't produce a game in 13 years... (they helped make prey and max payne I know...) funding a developpment team that doesn't bring in cash is just uncomprehendable...

there should be documentary a la "lost in la mancha" for duke nukem forever...

That sums it up - 13 years and no game.

No excuses. That's the fact.

Do you know that Terry Gilliam is pre-producing Don Quixote once again? Some people never give up!
