i was wondering if 3DRealms had a loophole in the deal when selling the I.P.
they can not mention Duke Forever, nor make a game relating to it.

but can they remake the originals modernized?

or do they only get to do sidescrollers?

or do they only get to release what has been done in the past and leave it as is?

I'm not really sure... it's complicated... I believe they have the rights to redistribute any of their old Duke games if they wish but if they were to do a total remake of one that may fall outside of their rights of the I.P. as that would be a new game.

Duke Nukem I and II should not be remade into FPS games.

I agree with ZuljinRaynor on this one. Let the classics stay classic.

No to 1st & 2nd questions. They can't make any new game containing Duke Nukem unless they have the rights to do so. Even remaking them isn't worth the time and money. If by modernizing, you mean updating the originals to run natively on newer systems, then you're SOL as the source code is long gone.

Yes to 3rd question. They can only release the older stuff as it was done prior to Gearbox buying the IP.

Given that we learned of 3DR retaining the rights to the old stuff when Gearbox said that the Duke Nukem Next Gen project needed the go ahead from 3DR(something they still maintain) I would say yes they could remake the side scrollers or Duke3D for that matter. But we can't be sure about this.

Right. They should be fanmade MODs instead.

No, they shouldn't be touched at all.
The originals are great as classics, when they are remade... they loose what made them awesome.

That's crap. If one didn't want to play them than one wouldn't have to. That's the beauty of remakes. The originals are always there. Remakes don't replace anything. I'd play them.

I didn't mean the originals loose their charm, I meant remakes almost never capture the spirit and charm of the games that they are based off.

Yeah. They always try to be too gritty and ultra realistic.

If they ever do that, It will ruin the "epicness" of those to Games.

If they were going to remake Duke I & II, I could only see it done in the style of Duke Nukem: Manhattan Project.

Which, admittedly, would be pretty awesome.

Well, actually Duke Nukem I and II could be mods of Manhattan Project (the only thing to be done would change graphics and levels and maybe camera style, to look like a true 2D game). To be optimistic, Manhattan Project is already the evolution of Duke Nukem II mixed with elements of Duke Nukem 3D!!!

Why haven't this thread died already? Duke 1 & 2 will never be remade.

However, they said DNMP was a tribute to sidescrollers, but with a 3D setting.

Is there any way of a possible DNMP mod? It even have a source so the game could be modified, or at least map editor?

There is an editor for DNMP, but modding is kinda dead anyway.

Never say never...
I could do it. But it is not likely that I will unless I retire sooner than anticipated. I like the idea of such a thing... and I play the old games often.

Not likely, but possible.
I know this... I would not mention it until nearly complete. Learned that lesson around here.
