updated voxel model pack?
hey a while ago someone released a voxel model pack and was curious to know if anyone is still working on it or are planning to make a voxel pack for the latest hrp release..

The HRP uses models, not voxels. Not that it can't though.

^ Yeah, but he didn't claim it did - there was a voxel pack released some time ago converting all the HRP models into voxels for classic mode. I don't think it's still being worked on however.

Using voxels for stuff in Duke3D is a bit of a technological dead end now that Polymer is in the pipeline anyway.

i dont know i just thought if they were building a normal map pack for the original 8bit textures it would be neat to have a voxel model pack for 8bit as well.

That was just an idea thrown around. It may or may not actually be happening.

Not really, a lot of old schoolers who played a lot of Shadow Warrior or Blood might really dig the appearance of Voxels. Voxels have their own charm, and are incomparable to models.

I think the voxel pack only made sense for people who intended to play in 8-bit while still using models instead of sprites, and the only way to do this was via voxels. HRP and voxels basically exclude each other. IMHO, a not *soooo* important/frequently used option, anyway...

I don't think the 8bit scene is going to die down as soon as the Polymer renderer comes. I have no arguments to back that up, it's just intuition.

I dont think it will. Duke has many communities beyond the "big three" English ones (3DR, AMC, DNR). There are also many players who belong to no community and just play. People have been calling out on Duke's death in general for years, and its actually been slowly picking up.

i think it's now getting to a point where people have options as to how they want their duke. duke is becoming a sortof customizable feature. my dream is to keep duke in 8-bit classic, use the polymer renderer's normal maps over the top of those, and then have the hrp's models with voxels. that's my dream anyway.

I still play in 8-bit at times! I use it for multiplayer (HRP takes too long to load), and playing at school/elsewhere.

Polymer doesn't support voxels. It may be implemented but it's unlikely.

This would not have all the models currently featured in HRP v4, however. It's quite outdated. Maybe someone should contact author and request new version (if it's not abandoned).

I haven't seen voxels since Tiberian Sun. It would be interesting to see them up close and personal.

Neither does 8-bit mode support normal maps for that matter.

The 8-Bit Renderer doesnt, but you can use normal maps on the 8-Bit Graphics in Polymer.

The problem with using the original graphics in a 3D renderer is that sprites look even flatter than in the old renderer when you look up or down. :/

Delta Force was cool because its entire terrains were created from Voxels.

For which voxels probably won't work. I was just saying you can't have both.

Re: updated voxel model pack?
I'm not working on voxel model pack anymore. First reason is the way eduke32 loads voxel models. It converts them to polygonal models every time when started and stores them in a different way than MD2s, MD3s and textures. Another reason is simple: I didn't play DN3D for a long time because I was playing GTA SA and making mods for it If some of you have noticed, I hadn't visited these forums.
Maybe if it were possible to disable KVX to polygonal models conversion in eduke32 and the way KVXs are stored was changed, I would do something. Otherwise I see no point in making voxel model pack. And if I did some work, I think I would start from scratch again. There are many models that don't need their resolution to be that high. For high quality there's already 32-bit mode

Well if there's a way to convert voxels to polygonal models, is there some way to convert all the polygonal models in the HRP to voxels?

The conversion.. Would that be the reason why EDuke32 is almost impossible to start when I load your voxel pack with it then? (On a relatively beefy comp - a 2 GHz Dual Core, 3 GB Ram, GeForce 8500 GT with 512 MB VRAM, etc.)

Yes, KVX to polygonal models conversion takes some time. And what's even worse - if cache is too small, EDuke32 shuts down.

I don't understand why such a thing was never corrected. it sounds like a glaring issue that needed to be fixed, but I'm guessing it's being ignored and assumed to fade then?
