Re: MGM has "The Hobbit" license..planning major movie(s)!
I've heard some rumors about the rights to make a "The Hobbit" movie returning to Tolkien Enterprises "next year" or so thus leading New Line to rush their own, does anyone know something solid about this?

Re: MGM has "The Hobbit" license..planning major movie(s)!
I read on superherohype.com that Raimi was interested in directin the Hobbit movie(s). Anyone know if he's signed on yet?
Kinda odd to do The Hobbit movies AFTER The Lord of the Rings movies eh?

They mean the second part of the story obviously. I believe they're dividing the book into two films.

Oh in that case.....BAH! That's lame. What a way to milk it. Best part of the story is the end.

Re: MGM has "The Hobbit" license..planning major movie(s)!
Can't say I'm that fond of splitting The Hobbit into two films; it just feels wrong. The Hobbit simply isn't the vast, multi-part epic that LOTR is.

Re: MGM has "The Hobbit" license..planning major movie(s)!
The Hobbit is one story. It'll fit in 3 hours. Though the BBC radio drama was 4 hours I think. I really liked that one.

Re: MGM has "The Hobbit" license..planning major movie(s)!
I was curious about that myself. Frankly, it sounds like a money grab to me. By producing the two films simultaneously, they'll save considerably on cost and essentially get the revenue from two movies for the price of one. They know these movies are going to be big, so they're taking advantage of it.

Re: MGM has "The Hobbit" license..planning major movie(s)!
The first film is supposed to be The Hobbit. The second film is supposed to be a bridge between The Hobbit and The Rings Trilogy based on appendices and Tolkien's other writing. (Here is one source, but I've read this about a dozen times over the last year or two)
Guillermo Del Toro and Alfonso Cuaron are both in the running to direct if it's not Raimi, and I'd be okay with either one.

Interesting. I hope they get Christopher Tolkien's input since editing his father's work is his area of expertise. His work on the recently released The Children of Hurin was outstanding.

Cuaron might be up for it? That's cool. I saw Children of Men again last night, it's one of my favorite movies ever. I was also a big fan of his go at Harry Potter. Was it the thid movie? I forget.
Regards, Sharman.

Maybe it's all speculation. Anyhoo, it sucks that Jackson won't be directing himself and while it does look like a cash-in, I'm still curious to see how they turn up. As long as McKellen, Holm and Serkis reprise their roles, I'll be happy.

I don't know why he'd hate them. Their IMO some of if not the best book adaption in film history. I'm happy as hell that del Toro is in negotiations he was the best director for the job! The Hobbit is going to be awesome! Now they just need to get Martin Freeman to play Bilbo.

Same here! I think he's a perfect fit for the material. If Jackson can't do it, he's just about the only other director I'd trust.

I need to read the hobbit. I may have read it when I was young (or had it read to me in class), but I'm not positive.

That bridge movie sounds like something George Lucas would come up with. I don't understand why it's needed, considering LOTR fills in the blanks in the intro.

Re: MGM has "The Hobbit" license..planning major movie(s)!
As long as Jackson and Walsh are involved, I'll be excited. It's not even that I think they're needed for it to be good, I just want it to be consistent with the previous trilogy.

Is the linking movie even confirmed? Or will Newline simply milk the franchise for everything it's worth by splitting The Hobbit into two films?

As for director, if it wasn't Jackson, my first pick would have been Del Toro. Sam Raimi wanted to do it but I just couldn't see him fitting in. What's nice about Jackson and Walsh settling their differences with New Line is the fact that almost all the actors like Ian McKellan, Andy Serkis, etc have been contacted/have said they'll gladly come back to do these movies.

I am very much looking forward to this, I just hope it doesn't throw off the LOTR films at all, as I'm looking forward to watching them in chronological order.
I remember wondering if they were ever going to make a live action Hobbit movie. |
