I didn't see this one coming. Steam is a really good service for digital distribution, and I trust it very much, but I never tought 3DR wanted to use this service for Prey.

If you do choose to activate Prey on Steam, will it invalidate that cd-key for use outside of Steam? (retail, non-triton)

I don't see how. When you install from the CD's you don't have to be online.

EDIT: I wouldn't try to run it at the same time you are running it on steam, cause the 2 CD keys would be the same, and that would probably cause you to lose the steam one at the least (if you are playing online that is).

The fact that Steam has been around for three+ years and growing sltrong makes no difference?
If Steam was a brand new company like Triton was... I would be a little hesitant about it. But any really hardcore gamer (probably the only gamers that will really use Steam for PREY) know Steam's record and know how great a service it really is.

But surely you appreciate the irony.

"Steam is giving digital distribution a bad name. It's too expensive. I don't like that a competitor has access to our sales records. I'll never use Steam as long as it's owned and operated by Valve. By the way, Prey is coming to Steam."

I still don't like it, no. But, none of that really matters anymore as I was just out checking the mail, and guess what; my hard copy of Prey is here. That's what I get for being loud and whiny I guess. Remember that kids, whining helps!

You guys are looking for some smoking gun way too hard. It's not as complicated as that. Triton disappeared. 2K needed a solution. They went after it. You can't just invent a reliable service in zero time like that, steam was available, it got used. End of story. And yes, I'm aware of what Scott said before this.

The bigger question is whether we'll continue to use Steam after this. Some of Scott's points are perfectly valid. But I don't think the subject of further Steam use has even come up at this point.

Edit: I've moved all the talk about the Triton patch over to the Triton thread, where it belongs.

I'd suggest 3drealms come up with their own digital distribution service or simply offer the games for sale/download on their site if they're not going with Steam in the long run.

Anyways, glad to see Prey is on Steam. It's a pretty solid service and I've had zero issues with it from the beginning.(I'm really digging the Zombie CounterStrike mod).

I don't mind games being delivered by Steam. However I do mind it if Steam somehow ever disallows me to play any game just because the Steam network is down.

That's why Steam defaults to offline mode when it can't reach the Steam servers for whatever reason.

DO IT! Do it just to do it also. I mean, there might be a flood, hurricane, UFO invasion and you lose your hard copy of Prey.

I seriously doubt I'll loose it.

I yet to loose a single game disc.... but I'm tempted by being able to play without a disc.

There is no need to download Prey from Steam if you already have Prey installed. Just register your Prey CD key, then start the download of files from Steam and stop it at 1%. Now the directories have been created in your steam apps\common folder, you can just copy the base folder from your original prey installation into the NEW steam location (Steam\steamapps\common\Prey. Start the download again and it will start up at 99%. Let it finish and bingo...it's all done!
It will even remember your keymappings, settings and saved games.
Tested and works!
There's no need to keep using the DVD to play the game when using steam...that's the real bonus for me, plus updates etc.

However I still argue the price tag. Why would I pay $49 for no box just the game, when I can pay the same (or lesser used) at ebgames and get the CE with all the goodies? Steam games should be cheap and affordable, in the less than $10.00 range.
By paying 50$ for a game, you're paying for software, not for plastic box and manual. Box and manual would take 3$ at the most. It is just illusion.

Thats because I *do* think that. What did I stutter? Prey came in a metal tin, came with figures, an art book, a DVD, and a manual. That to me justified the giant price. As opposed to just downloading the game for the same price.

When I see a game I really want for a big price, the deal had better be sweetened. I personally feel all games are a tad expensive. The Nintendo DS has the sweet spot of $34 CAD (over here) for even new games, and that is a deal and a half. However I am supposed to pay about $50 CAD for a game on steam without the media, the box or anything along with authentication attached? That isn't exactly screaming "deal" for me.

Lower the price point and suddenly I become an impulse buyer. There are games on steam that are $9.99 and thats a damn fine price. Stack Prey up next to them and its becomes apparent that it is overpriced.

I agree that there should be "some" price difference between regular games and steam games and I admit that some collector editions are very nice to have but aren't steam games already somehow cheaper then retail ones?
