Dreamcast, anyone?
I'm fed up with this, so im not bothering any more.
So i wondered if anybody else was willing to try it out, i was trying to port EDuke32 to the Sega Dreamcast, but nothing compiles in windows - regardlessof what i use to do it, and whether im doing it for DreamCast or Windows. (these tools apparently compile for dreamcast when set up in Bloodshed DevCPP) I can compile things in Linux, but dont have a machine to put linux on, nor are my Dreamcast tools compatible with linux. I also tried using the original source code for Duke Nukem 3D, but i get the same problem, the compiler just exits without doing anything (MSVC, DevCPP, Watcom, and i had this other one i cant remember) - literally, just stops, no matter what i try to do. So does anybody have the available skills/tools to try this for me? I dont expect anything to come of this really, and i'll probably wonder why i typed it when i am less annoyed at my computer. I know a guy did try doing this once, but it needed the DC keyboard (which i do have) but it was buggy as hell, and i dont know much else about it except where it is. If someone could compile this stuff for Dreamcast (e.g. make the .exe a dreamcast .bin - i have seen it done, but have no real idea of how to do this) i could then try to make the controls work with the Dreamcast pad - of course meaning it need be compiled again in its modified state, but i see no point in trying till i knowi can have the program actually work. ---------- Post added at 06:30 AM ---------- Previous post was at 05:10 AM ---------- Ahh, i came up with an idea... there are emulators for saturn and ps1 (there's also a dos one, but i cant get it working) I could just use an emulator to play it on my dreamcast i suppose, but i dont know how good they are yet, however, if i find one, i might tamper with it, so for example, i could get one that can read .iso files, and make a DreamCast image in which you had to add and ISO image of the Duke Nukem 3D disc (from Saturn/PlayStation), meaning that would essentially be your back-up copy, but running on another platform. Still like the idea of a straight forward port though, apparently that one that exists cant do the full version because of memory limitations, The Dreamcast has 16Mb of ram, duke needs 8, but i can run duke on my 486 with 4 megabytes of ram... hmm, i did however get this other port to run, but my PAL console has problems, my NTSC console is just as slow, but shows color properly (i know why this is) - i applaud the guy that did it though.

Probably, i think im gonna stick to that emulator idea, and see what happens.
If the source for the N64 version was available, that would probably be easier to port, but it's not, so emulation it is. Hmm, i could always try some of the dreamcast forums somewhere, maybe someone on there could try something.

Re: Dreamcast, anyone?
I just saw this thread and have a dreamcast. It seems the last post was only about a month ago. Is this thing still happening?

Re: Dreamcast, anyone?
I'd hope so then I could get my DC sent from the USA and have something to play on the TV at my Mother-In-Law's house.
![]() I tried Duke it Out on DC or whatever it's called, but I think it requires a DC keyboard which is EPIC FAIL. |

Re: Dreamcast, anyone?
I tried the emulation end of stuff, and it failed (really did, i actually got a BSOD on my dreamcast, followed by the Black Swirl of Death - no worries, i have about 4 Dreamcast anyway, oh and a red biohazard one
![]() So i started tweaking Duke it out on DC; I lost my copy of the source that i was working on, but i am getting it again and will keep working on it. I figured the main problem with compiling was because of mismatched libraries, but the compiler i use for SH-4 isn't very verbose making it difficult to track these things down. It is the Duke it out on DC port i am working on (it's descended from Icculus.org Duke3d) - But i will be working on controlling with pads, however things like that are part of the code for KOS and i am concentrating more on the game first (Like making it run at proper speed) Now i have to find the DC Dev tools again, but as soon as i do, i shall be back at work on this - but don't expect anything, i usually drop projects when they get tough or they end up failing. ---------- Post added at 11:21 PM ---------- Previous post was at 11:15 PM ---------- Oh, in case anyone was interested, Bero doesn't link to the source on the page (also, he seems to have dissapeared off the face of the earth, last thing he seemed to do was troll a forum once 5 years ago, and nobody ever saw him again) but you can obtain it here: http://sourceforge.net/project/showf...ckage_id=83844 This is what i am workign from.

Re: Dreamcast, anyone?
Well if this thing does get finished, I'll be the first one to try it. I just looked at the dreamcast controller and noticed that both the d pad and analogue stick are on the left side, so I have no idea how we're going to be able to move Duke and control aiming at the same time using them (if using the controller)
![]() I also remember playing a port of the marathon trilogy to the DC. It used the keyboard, but the reason why I didn't end up playing it was because you couldn't save the game! However with Duke, even if you can't save the game, at least there will be level select and hopefully cheats to get all the weapons. If this doesn't come out, I guess I can still play it on the PC at least ![]()

Re: Dreamcast, anyone?
In answer to the controls, i aren't that sure yet, i will either have the stick move backwards and forwards and turn left and right (mor like the arrows on the original controls for duke)
Or go half life style where the stick looks, A, B, X and Y move, Right Trigger shoots, Left one as use (and then i'd try to use it as a "Shift" key also, making the buttons do different things) I don't know yet which layout i will use, and probably wont be sure til i get the control pad working with it (DC Keyboard is the only thing that works with it at present).

Re: Dreamcast, anyone?
The keyboard would be fine if the controller is too hard to do. If only we could fit the jump key somewhere on the controller.

Re: Dreamcast, anyone?
That's very similar to the Fur Fighters configuration, if not identical. The "shift" key is redundant if the look changes your forward motion angle and the B and X keys are for side strafe.

Re: Dreamcast, anyone?
well the b and x buttons would be for strafe, I think what was meant was that the left trigger would be 'use' and 'walk'. It's the jump button that needs to be fit in somewhere.

Re: Dreamcast, anyone?
![]() ![]() My friends and I play UT and Q3A on the DC all the time and have no probs with the controls on the DC Controller. But yeah, of course, I didn't realize it wasn't running full speed. My bad. Yeah just concentrate on gameplay atm. ![]() |
