Re: Merry Christmas from 3D Realms
Nowadays FPS must be as close as possible to the most advanced action movies.
But IMHO FPS is not just about shooting. Why? Cuz it's really boring... Look at the movies - they never has a non-stop action!! And non-action scenes does'nt has to be a talk-show. And each movie hero needs a gorgeous women - cuz if he has none - he's sucks (well, at least if u have a possibility to put a girlfriend into ur scenario - u gotta do it). The're alot of things that makes a movie realm looks actually real. And the're alot of movies that looks not real at all. And i guess it's time for our dear developers to learn from movies and chew pop-corn.
P.S.: Unreal Engine 3 has a powerfull tool for a movie making purpose. Take a look at Epic Games - they really got some good stuff and IMHO GoW3 gonna be a first action-movie-game ever.
P.P.S.: Let me know if u got the same opinion about the future of gaming.

Re: Merry Christmas from 3D Realms
i completly disagree.
i love to watch movies and i love to play games, and those things should be still seperate in the future.
i DONT WANT a movie to play, i want a hard interactive game where u need brains and skill to get to the last level and beat it.
dont get me wrong, i am a fan of a good storyline in a game, but the best examples for good storytelling in games are portal and world of goo(latest). i HATE to watch cutscenes and push buttons at a certain time to keep the cutscene rolling.
Pls dont make Duke Nukem Forever a interactive movie

PS: I love Max Payne for example too. Movies suck compared to that. That(and Mark Wahlberg) is why the MP Movie sucked donkey-ass.

PPS: Moviegayms are for Casualgaymers! Look how the casual-gaymers killed the Prince of Persia! its so so so sad

Future games and specially FPS won't be games where you follow one storyline to the end and the game is over...
The more komplex games become, the more possibilities will be given to the player to decide what and how to play it.

to get to the point... in the future the player chooses what role to play and what story the game should be creating for him, based on his actions and decisions.
For example: Duke could be a hero, a villian, a secret agent or just a frekkin paperboy . choice is yours.

Lol, I'm not reeeeally sure what you're trying to say here, bob.
but about the sect part... you sure about that?
I just don't see it so dramatic... we are just a fanbase of one pretty hot and well known videogame icon.
these fans are everywhere for all kinds of items and products.
from Star Trek to Elvis, from McDonalds to Diablo 3
if they are all sects, what is scientology then?

Re: Merry Christmas from 3D Realms
Frift u gonna be bored in a few minutes of such a gameplay. Well, maybe u ain't a hardcore old school gamer, and u still like to eXplore virtual worlds - i don't know. But u gotta understand one simple thing - game has to be FUN. It's "when it's fun" not "when it's done"...
So i want games to be as close as possible to movies and books. And i've said before that i don't want a cut-scenes with a bla-bla show - cut-scenes is somethin really old and stupid. Ok - i found an example. Remember such movies as Total recall, or any action movie with Arnold - they just full of action - the're absolutely no scenes where nothin happens... And by action i mean not only shootin or kickin - any action in a camera frustum is action. But it's gotta be somethin that tells us a story, that adds somethin in a storyline...not just another blow...
And till we make a real AI there will be no possibilities to make a game with u as a director. But who needs a gamedevelopers if we got a one game that allows us to be everything we want to? And who can guarantee that the story u'll have will be perfect done?
And the last thing - we talkin bout shooters, not bout RPG or somethin. And not about a simulator of SAS unit or some another special forces... like RainbowSix or even FarCry. And we talkin about shooters, but not bout survival shooters like ResidentEvil or even HalfLife! IMHO shooters (or FPS) is somethin as simple as pull the trigger, hide behind objects, kick asses, jump over obstackles, push this button and game over. So that kind of interactive entertainment gotta be as close as possible to action movies. All the other things gonna be borin sh*t that u will uninstall after 20-40min of gamin.
Yeah and the last last thing - bein made as a movie not means that u can't blow up a wall and kill badguys from behind! U got a situation - take care of it! U r the last action movie hero - u got skills, guns, and a mighty foot! So that scenario shows u who u r - not u by uself. Ur role is to use all of the skills just like the real superhero - be quick or be dead. Be smart or be dead. Be Duke or die!

This is real late game stuff, (posted on page 8) but, by definition, that is not anarchy, but another form of government. I would say other forms of government are tempting, but we have a good (ish) thing as it is (forms of democracy).

P.S. Sorry 'bout off-topicism

OK OK... Relax! You're not fighting for your life, we're talking about games!^^
And some people think I'M the one taking games to serious... Sorry I started game philosophy .

Wallpaper anyone? We totally forgot that!
What a shame... About those bosses, don't the remind you a bit of dinosaurs?
I wonder how much damage we can do to them.
Shooting of that massive leg, or holding your gun up close to their jaws and "hello dentist"!

Re: Merry Christmas from 3D Realms
I'm fighting for a good games. Some time ago i wanted to be a game developer. And actually i made some 3d engine that supports shaders and complex lighting model. And a lot of stuff as well - but in the end i understand that good (big) game is not about engine power only. Actually the engine is nothin. It's just a tool, like a pencil and piece of paper. How u use it to describe ur idea/fantasy/scenario it's more important. And so the models of ur characters is not so important by themselves too. Cuz how u put them into the game it's more important. What would u feel when u'll see them first time in the game it's more important. And u can have a highly detailed character, but one is too far from u to see those details - like if one have some long ranged weapon - so u have to put some extra detail to that thing, to recoginze it from a long distance...
Well - i can't say anything about the game by the wallpaper. That's it.

sry, but i think u are the one who doesnt realize what games are.
think about games in general(boardgames like risk, puzzling or arcade games like beat em ups, and so on, there are masses of gametypes where there is no point for a story) and you will see that there are much more games(fun ones) that have minimal or no story at all.
the main thing, like u said urself, is that the game should be FUN.
and there are less and less games that are fun or innovative, but even more of ur moviegames, where u get the same shooter for the 99999th time with another "great" story. BLA, quit it devs PLS!
more braids, world of goos, gumboys etc.!

i can only say it again, i want to have to try hard to beat games. i want em to be fun and challenging and if they have a nice story too, the game is perfect. but that will remain as the bonus and will never be the main reason for me to play a game. I DONT WANT MOVIEGAMES! get urself a laserdisc player and the few sucking real moviegames that have been made, then tell me u really want that.

i play games since commodore c64, over to amiga 500 and all nintendo/sega consoles and started to play on pc on a 386, i played more games than anyone i know in reallife and i miss the old times.

Well - first of all it's ur opinion about games and just it. And i can tell u that everyone has some opinion and that's why we can make diffirent games and sell them.
What is more important it's the major opinion about a choosen kind of game. To make it as more popular as it can go. So let's make another thread and find out? What do u think?

You completely missed his point. He wasn't referring to FMV games which I'm assuming you are talking about, but the content and the feeling of an action movie which he feels would be relevant in an action game.

While this screenshot is pretty cool, I dont like some of the new redesigned bits. Theyre missing old characteristics that made them great. (Mandibles on Octa/Battle Lord, Red eye for Cycloid, Yellow eyes and reptilian look for Enforcer, etc) The new Trooper is completely rad, though.
