BTW, when I posted Keith's interview, I ran it through the spellchecker before I did that. Check out these amusing suggestions for "Paganitzu".

That's assuming we can even find Todd. Todd's a hermit, and lives in a shack in the backwoods of Oregon somewhere last I heard.

When I started this, he was on my list, but no one has talked to him in ages.

Whenever somebody brings this up my mind flashes to Office Space for some reason. Hey if he had a working experience similar to the movie, the interview would be very interesting, huh?

This interview with Keith told me some new stuff except what I most wanted to know- How tall is he?

I haven't gone over and measured him, but if I had to ask, I'd say about 6-6 or 6-7.

No, actually Todd was nothing like the Stapler guy in Office Space. Left on very good terms. He just had enough, and wanted out. Given how much $ he'd made, I can't say I blame him. Would like to see him again, he was a good friend - just to say hi, and shoot the shit for awhile.

Not the stapler guy, although he did get rich. I was referring to the lead hero character who ends up being set free and in the romantic last scene, works a shovel in construction and thus attains his bliss. Only in Todd's case it was a backhoe iirc. Wonder what he's up to now?

Don't know. Even if we did find Todd, he's likely to say nothing more than "It was all cool", and that's it.

I did make contact with one of the guys on my "can't find them" list today, and he agreed. So that's cool.

Re: The Apogee Legacy Interview Series
Today we bring you the third in our "Apogee Legacy" Interview series. This week we speak with Karen Crowther (now known as Karen Chun), the author of the only two educational games in our product line. These are Word Rescue, and Math Rescue, both released in 1992. These are the only titles in our line she was involved with directly, but she's been a friend to the company for awhile now. Additionally, she's the only female lead game designer we've had. We've had other women work for us, or on our titles, but she's the only lead designer we've ever had.

So without further delay, we take you to Hawaii for our interview with Karen...

<font size="2" face="Verdana,Arial" color="#ffffff">Past Pioneers of the Shareware Revolution

</div>

1) How did you first come in contact with Apogee?

I was a fanatic Commander Keen and Duke Nukem (sidescroller) player. I love those games and still think they're the best. (And I really miss Tom Hall and his wacky sense of humor...hey, Tom, you need to visit me in Maui!!!)

Dang! My mind is going...I know Scott and I were involved in a lot of political stuff (fighting off government regulation of computer games etc. with Diana Gruber and Rosemary West - hammering out the role of shareware and making sure the authors didn't get ripped off by the retail publishers) but I think that came later.

The one of Keith I posted in his interview where he's looking like Indiana Jones is about the same size - his is blown up about 500%, so it looks bad.

Cool...
I didn't know she was the one who created that game (Math Rescue)... I played that game alot on my old school (1998) becasue they had some old PC's with various Apogee games on them, unfortunately this is the only i remember of them...

I remember one of my old classmates got Quake 1 for our "new" PC later... Which ran 1998...

Anyways, she deserves a bunch of "thanks" from me, since i got to know about Apogee from those games... (later again, 3DR, but that's another story)

Those two games are some of the very few Apogee games that I haven't really played at all (I never liked educational stuff, even (well, especially!) when I was little). Anyway, it was still quite interesting.. but I'm pretty sure the following ones will be more interesting for me than this was (like the two previous ones which I liked better).

Another wicked interview, and a great success story too.
I remember Word and Math rescue well. I got them for my little sister, but I had fun playing them as well.

I like the way she gave props to Mr. Replogle

Todd is the MAN. Someone has to track him down, as I'm sure he would be a great interview. When he was on here a few years ago, he was always very cordial.

Anyway, keep up the good work, Joe, this is a great series!

I won't say who, but I just got two more interviews back from former developers today. The series looks like it will be going for quite awhile now.

Scott mentioned wanting to have 30 folks in the series over on his blog, but I don't think we'll be able to pull off that many. Course Scott could twist some arms.

I think it could, but it'd be alot of work just to network some of the guys you said haven't been in touch for some years now.

Though after mentioning Scott twisting arms, I have this whole mafia scene playing out in my head. It's quite humorous.

Re: The Apogee Legacy Interview Series
Today our "Apogee Legacy" Interview series continues with its fourth edition, this time with Tom Hall, a core figure in the early days (and more) of our company. Tom was a founding member of id Software, working with them and us on Commander Keen & Wolfenstein 3D. He later joined Apogee, and was the project lead on Rise of the Triad, as well as having his hands in several titles doing work for them ranging from Hocus Pocus, Duke Nukem II, and Duke Nukem 3D. Additionally, he was the original project lead on Prey when it was in it's original incarnation.

Since his time here, he's worked at Ion Storm, Monkeystone, Midway, & now KingsIsle. Tom has a huge connection with us and our past, so we're sure you're eager to hear what he has to say...

1) How did you first come in contact with Apogee?

Scott Miller had been trying to hire John Romero from his old days as a contributor to Uptime (an old monthly software magazine on disk), then he'd been getting fan mail from various people which he hung up. Then he noticed they were all coming from the same address! Both amused and angered, John wrote a strongly-worded letter back, only to find out it was Scott wanting to publish something.

Carmack and I had stayed up late one night making a funny joke demo of Super Mario Bros 3 and putting it on Romero's desk in the morning. This lead to a demo for Nintendo, which got to the head table but was rejected, so we decided to do our own thing. I went off to my office and in 15 minutes came up with the story of Commander Keen, which Scott was dying to publish, and so he did!
